Greetings!
Autumn is so beautiful on the Peninsula! Here is your September 2011 Navigator News(tm) as we get Fall underway!
As you know, this year we had a regular monthly feature: Eat, Stay, Explore. In our September issue here, we continue to bring you some great Door County places to explore! The format:
1) A restaurant or food-related place (we think rather creatively, so don't be surprised to read about diners, coffee shops, bakeries and markets as well as restaurants)
2) A place to stay or rest (hotel, resort, inn, or campground) and
3) A destination to wander (nature-related, shopping-related, arty or event-focused. Again, there are no limits to our imagination, and there are vast places to explore around here). So hang on for the remainder of the year! And tell your friends to get in on the fun and subscribe - it's free!
And an additional two articles to keep you informed and ready to have fun. Please tell your friends to subscribe too.

Eat in Door County: Custard's Last Stand in Baileys Harbor is a charming place where you can have a sandwich and a hot or cold drink or choose from a variety of homemade custard flavors made here.
The friendly staff (check out the giant size coffee mug where you can leave them a tip if you desire) will make you a sub sandwich to order. Choose from ham, turkey, roast beef, salami and pepperoni. You can also add cheese and a variety of other tasty embellishments such as red peppers and onions. Use the blue sub sandwich forms, and circle what you want on your sandwich.
Or just go for a scoop or two of the homemade custard. It comes in a plain or waffle cone or in a cup. Flavors include chocolate, vanilla, vanilla espresso and more. But hot drinks may be more popular this time of year. They have cappuccino, mocha, espresso, chai tea and many more. The restaurant (with a few tables for dining inside and out) is situated in a vintage building with architectural details including an old tin ceiling and creaky wood floors.
Stay in Door County: We met Penny Olson, owner of Olson Cottages (6846 Hwy. 57) earlier this year for a new DoorCountyNavigator.com review. Her place is so popular in the summer that we thought we would save this story and write about it now when you really have a chance to get in and reserve one of these charming cottages that sit on the lake in Baileys Harbor.
Here, three architecturally intriguing cottages are nestled just about 30 feet from the beach. Another one has a limited lake view from its kitchen and deck. All four cottages each have one bathroom, an outdoor deck/patio and fully equipped kitchen.
Included is the Redwood Cottage (three bedrooms) with vintage details like a pitched high wood ceiling in the living room and a native stone and quartz wood-burning fireplace. The Twin Cedars (three bedrooms) is a genuine log cabin, while Grandma's Cottage (three bedrooms) has natural log walls and an original stone fireplace. Greenwood Cottage (two bedrooms) is the one with a limited lake view. The Olson Cottages will most likely appeal to people who value authenticity, value and serenity. Check them out at doorcountynavigator.com.
Explore in Door County: Fat Louie's Olive Oil Co. was really hopping when we visited on a Saturday in mid-August. Here, people sample flavorful olive oils and vinegars. Small pieces of bread are cut up and ready for you to dip them into the olive oil and vinegar of your choice. Choose from flavors such as roasted onion-cilantro, Tuscan herb, chipotle and wild mushroom-sage. The vinegars available include black cherry, fig, apple, traditional 18-year (the one we chose for our salads) and many others. The products come in a couple bottle sizes and price points.
Fat Louie's Olive Oil Co. has three locations: 7812 Hwy. 42, Egg Harbor; The Cherry Hut, 8813 Hwy. 42, Fish Creek; and the Barrel Room, 4170 Main St., Fish Creek. |
Colorful Fall Fests!!

It's the most colorful time of the year in Door County, so make hotel reservations early, and plan to attend Pumpkin Patch Festival, held in Egg Harbor Oct. 8 and 9.
This is quite possibly still the only weekend of the year when all Peninsula hotels post "sorry, no vacancy" signs. The extremely popular event started in 1983 to celebrate autumn and protect the harvest.
Decorated scarecrows and pumpkins are now main attractions throughout Egg Harbor during the festival and on days preceding the event as well. View them on foot, by car, and make certain to travel throughout the village.
In addition to the décor, the festival offers entertainment, art and crafts, rides, live music and plenty of treats, according to organizers. Street vendors plan to sell roasted sweet corn, caramel apple sundaes, chili, turkey legs and more.
Also, go to Sister Bay for the annual Fall Fest Oct. 14 to 16. Fest attractions are the arts and crafts fair, scores of food and drink booths with proceeds from sales benefiting nonprofit organizations.
Don't miss the ping pong ball shoot (formerly a drop) on Sunday afternoon, when reportedly 10,000 balls will be released. Many are imprinted with marketing offers-like 15 percent off or free coffee-and spectators have a one in ten chance of winning a prize, organizers say.
Also part of this 66th annual event in Sister Bay are the parade, live entertainment and children's activities. |
