Rev. Delores Berry...returns to the Cathedral

February is African American History Month

Today we recall and celebrate: John Rock who on Feb. 1, 1865 became the first African American attorney to practice before the Supreme Court. He had previously been a Boston Justice of the Peace; Writer Langston Hughes who was born on Feb. 1, 1902. Hughes was one of the most influential artists of the Harlem Renaissance and is thought by many to have been gay; Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. who on Feb. 2, 1995 became the first African American to walk in space; Rosa Parks who was born on Feb. 2, 1913 in Tuskegee, AL. Ms. Parks is famous for refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white passenger. She is sometimes referred to as the "mother" of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1996 she was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton; Warren Moon who on Feb. 4, 2006 became the first African American quarterback to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame; Baseball legend Hank Aaron who was born on Feb. 5, 1934; and Eubie Blake who was born in Baltimore on Feb. 7, 1883. The Library of Congress states: "Eubie Blake was one of the most important figures in early-20th-century African American music, and one whose longevity made him a storehouse of the history of ragtime and early jazz music and culture."

Relief Effort in Haiti Continues

The Sunshine Cathedral has established a disaster relief fund for those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. To date we have received $1,005.00. All of these funds have been sent to UFMCC for disbursement to those directly affected by this disaster. If you would like to make a donation please visit the Cathedral's website www.sunshinecathedral.org

Loaves and Fishes Sunday

The first Sunday of each month is Loaves and Fishes Sunday, the day when you have the opportunity to support the Loaves and Fishes ministry by donating food to those in need. For every item that you donate you'll receive an opportunity to win a drawing prize. February's drawing prize is a $25.00 Publix Gift Card. Please bring your non-perishable donations to the courtyard, located between the chapel and the social hall. Thank you for your continued generosity.
