A Thank you to our Christmas Elves

by Kurt Litzenberger

I'm very proud of how special the Sunshine Cathedral looks during the Christmas season. Three events alone - the combined Cathedral Choir/Pride Wind Ensemble Christmas Concert, three performances of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus Holiday Concert, and our Christmas Eve services - bring nearly 3500 people through our doors at this time of year.  For a number of these people, it is their first impression of the Sunshine Cathedral and I want to thank those who made our decorations possible this year.  Lain Benjamin, Cathedral board member Bill Vaccarro, Charlie Fields, and Deacon Joel Slotnick "fluffed" and lit all the garland and 61 trees. Danny Lang installed the platforms and chancel extension required to fit all the extra musicians for the season's events.  Matthew Simmons helped install the additional lighting fixtures donated by Charlie LoPiccolo and also set up the trees used outdoors on Christmas Eve.  Board member Mike Manning took up his annual position at the ironing board and re-pressed the 70 bows used throughout the room. Because what goes up must come down, I must give special thanks again to Lain Benjamin who helped ALL New Year's Day to take everything down and organize it for next year and Joel Slotnick who came in the next day to move it all to storage.  Please express your appreciation to these people for making the Sunshine Cathedral a beautiful place for the holidays!

Feminist Theologian Mary Daly Dies

Mary Daly died on January 3, 2010 in Massachusetts. Her books include Beyond God the Father: Toward a Philosophy of Women's Liberation, Gyn/Ecology: the Metaethics of Radical Feminism, The Church and the Second Sex, and Amazon Grace: Re-Calling the Courage to Sin Big.

Her contributions to feminist theology, philosophy, and theory were many, unique, and world-changing. She created intellectual space; she set the bar high. Even those who disagreed with her are in her debt for the challenges she offered.

Mary Daly always advised women to throw their lives as far as they would go. Mary lived that way herself. May her spirit soar and her ideas endure.
