Saint Mary

The University of Saint Mary, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas recently completed a Feasibility and Planning Study conducted by Petrus Development.

This study was designed to solicit input and determine support for a proposed $15 million capital campaign.

More than 300 individuals participated by means of a personal interview, focus group or online survey.

Participants were asked to react to the proposed campaign needs, identify potential benefactors, surface possible campaign leaders, and discuss potential challenges and obstacles that could impact a future campaign.

At the conclusion of the study, Petrus presented a final report analyzing the data gleaned from respondents and offering recommendations to help the university meet its needs.

The University of Saint Mary is currently seeking applications for a Vice President of Advancement. Click here for more information.

Congratulations to Sr. Diane Steele, Mike Alex, Shelia Berry and the University of Saint Mary!

Greetings!

July 1st... the start of a new fiscal year and the beginning of a new time period of goal setting and accountability.  As you look to the next 12 months of activity in your organization, I encourage you to set a new standard in tracking your activity and performance objectives.  The Harvard Business Review eNewsetter that I read each day recently mentioned that when people track their progress in a task, they are statistically more likely to succeed in a task.  Or, as my business partner John Flynn likes to say... Winners Keep Score!!

If you CLICK HERE you will find an excel spread sheet that has been developed over time to track development activity in various organizations.  You can change the goals and activities to suit your individual development plan for the year, but the point is to keep track. Measure your activity. It will lead to successful development and increase your organization's effectiveness in fulfilling its mission.

Enjoy the 4th of July holiday!

Take care,

Despite a drop of 3.6 percent from last year's total charitable giving, optimism continues to run high among experts and organizations. Sponsors of the Giving USA annual report believe that the level of giving in 2009 is actually good overall, as they had expected giving to be down even further. The fiscal year still saw almost $304 billion of charitable giving, which is no ignorable sum. Donations to religious organizations dropped 0.7 percent, but remain the largest share of contributions overall. Philanthropic gifts to education dropped 3.6 percent, the most out of all the categories.

Even though 2009 represents the worst recession since the Great Depression, with one of the biggest stock market drops in years and highest unemployment rates in decades, that doesn't mean it's time for non-profits to throw in the towel. In fact, now more than ever, More...
Leading Change Through Teamwork - Part II
    Leading Change

Managing Partner, SBS Partners

In Part I of Leading Change through Teams, information on the need to understand the development, structure and process of teams to create positive, effective change was discussed. The three common constraints that most often cause teams to fail in achieving the vision and goals set before them were explored in detail.

Leaders often misunderstand why they are not achieving the results they want through the teams they create. In review, the three most common reasons that prevent teams from accomplishing the goals set before them are:

Sometimes, ready or not, it becomes painfully apparent that your organization needs to raise a significant amount of money.  Ideally, the key elements of an annual fund are already in place allowing your organization to provide for day-to-day operations, lay an extensive groundwork for the future and begin generating excitement among benefactors, staff and volunteers for the road ahead.  However, sometimes what is really needed to significantly expand fund-raising efforts is a capital campaign. But how do you know if your organization is really ready for a capital campaign?
