Metrics: Tools for Measuring Success
By John Flynn, Principal Petrus Development
How many phone calls did I make last month? How many gifts of $5,000 or more
did we receive this year compared to last year? How many new benefactors are
contributing to our organization in the last two years? Is the money we make on
that special event really the best use of our limited time and resources? Or
would our time be better spent improving the phone-a-thon?
While keeping track of phone calls, benefactor visits or event outcomes may seem like a luxury to some, the most successful development
directors understand the value of measuring success. Whether you call them
metrics, benchmarks, goals, assessments, outcomes, or results the bottom line
remains the same. Organizations that plan, track, measure and evaluate their
development activity are often more successful in their organizational efforts
than those that do not. More...

EFT Giving: On This Rock
By Greg Gorman, Development Director St. Mary's Catholic Center Texas A&M University
The Lord had Peter. At St. Mary's Catholic Center at Texas
A&M University, we have an electronic recurring gift program. Our rock, our
financial foundation was built on a special donor base of monthly
consistent supporters who are committed to supporting our mission through EFT giving. So
committed is this special class of
benefactors that they allow us to automatically draft their banking accounts or
credit cards, month in, month out - for years.
As our programs have grown over time, so has the need
to increase revenue to support our ministry. Like almost every campus
ministry program in the country, we too have a gap between how much
money is raised by pew collections and diocesan support, and how much
money it takes to run an effective campus ministry program and provide
for the many needs of our students. More...

Time Management Tips for Development Directors
By Mary Macuga, Development Director All Saints Catholic Newman Center Arizona State University"The best laid
plans of mice and men often go awry." Robert Burns
I enjoy maxims
like this - little nuggets that have proven themselves over time. This one however, painfully reminds me of my
work in development. Development
Directors always have a heavy workload and many responsibilities - which can
cause any sublime fundraising plan to go awry.
It has happened to me too often to count. Years ago I tried to manage my workload by
simply working more and more hours. But the
birth of my first child coincided with the launch of a capital campaign. In order to keep my sanity I had to hunker
down and get serious about managing time better. I began the journey of learning how to
control my schedule rather than letting it control me. The application of good time management
skills can be the difference between feeling chronically overwhelmed or
enjoying your work and advancing your mission.
Here are some of
my favorite tips (and maxims) for managing time. More...

My First Year as a Development Director
By David Pederson, Development Director St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center Minnesota State University, Mankato
In
July of 2008, I began my new job as Development Director of the St. Thomas More Catholic
Newman Center
at Minnesota State
University - Mankato.
Fresh out of college, with my shiny new B.S. in Business Management
in hand, becoming a Development Director for a small Catholic campus ministry
was a pretty new concept.
Yet at the end of our first year of a development program, the Catholic Newman
Center increased our giving by over 2000%, More...
