summer
Can you believe summer is already coming to an end? How quick they go by. However,  its also time for all the kids to go back to school and for us parents to get a break.

August is a exciting month as we are preparing to open registration for inspired. 2010. Thats right, its already time to start planning for next year's event.

I'm also excited to announce that I'm getting ready to launch a new furniture line with ScrapnCube!

furniture

Here is a sneak peak of the "design beginnings" of my new furniture line. All the furniture will be custom hand made with the highest quality by ScrapnCube.

I'm actually headed to Oregon at the end of month to see the prototype. I'm so excited to see the final result!

The designs are expected to be released this fall.

In addition to the furniture line, ScrapnCube will be working with me on a whole new make over of my studio. We will be sharing each step of the way on my blog. So be sure to check in on the progress.

inspired 2010 logo

We are excited to announce that registration for the 2010 inspired. Artist Workshop opens on September 1st. However we will be opening pre registration to all our first year Alumni on August 15th. All the first year Alumni with receive a special email to register early.

Inspired. Artist Workshop is a three-day immersion in cross-genre art and crafting. Our featured artist instructors share their vision and technique in an intimate, supportive environment, challenging students to expand their creativity through the exploration of new artistic methods and mediums.

Donna Downey is your host for the event and hand picks each artist instructor with the goal of sharing what she herself finds inspiring and current in world of art and crafting.

With a focus on artistic process, the core workshop program gives you three hours with each of the featured artists for two-days of horizon-expanding instruction. You will also be able to choose from a variety of mini workshops to fill in the third day of your workshop experience.

Inspired. Artist Workshop is all about the experience of exploring the artist in you, as you step out and broaden your definition of personal creativity. The goal of the workshop is to feed your passion to create and express yourself through multiple mediums. All levels of crafters are welcome as the event celebrates the unique artistic vision each attendee brings with them.

If the idea of learning a new and inspired process and discovering new artistic methods to give a new platform to your personal artistic voice and vision appeal to you, this is the workshop for you.

trash to treasure
sierra
Take a look at what Sierra Renter did with last month's trash to treasure "Soda Can" challenge!

Sierra Renter loves to create in her "oh so spare" time.  She enjoys the process of creating something lovely.  It very rarely ends up as what she envisioned and that can be the most satisfying part, having the journey take her somewhere new.  Collage or mixed media is her all time favorite and what she does the most of. She works full time and comes home to her wonderful husband and their four awesome kiddos.  She lives happily ever after in the sunny state of California.

ABOUT HER PROJECT:
js 2009

Donna's suggestion of cutting the cans into tin shapes was what inspired me.  My first thought was flowers!  I painted an 11x14 canvas in black, white and gray so my soda colors would pop.  Next, I cut the flowers out free hand using tin snips.  Evidently you can use regular 'ol kitchen scissors which is MUCH easier and gives a cleaner edge.  I layered different soda can flavors, added an eyelet for the center and Mountain Dew for the stems and petals.  Once that was done my project looked pretty naked on the top.  Jason, my hubby, suggested cutting stars and applying them over the stamped ones. Loved that idea!  What better soda to use for stars than the yellow Squirt can?  The dragonfly is a chipboard I had and traced onto the back of a 7Up can.  All the can shapes are glue gunned down.  This gives the illusion of the shapes coming off the canvas.  Stamped my little happy soda journaling in white, sprinkled on some black glitter and spray sealed to finish.  It's currently hanging in our kitchen and it makes me smile every time I look at it!

Here is a link to the finished project.

This month's trash to treasure idea is Twisty Ties:

ideas to think about:
  • twist them into different shapes.
  • use them for creative attachments for photos.
  • make a creative border with them.
  • string them together.
  • creative a twist tie alphabet.
e-mail me your project pictures with the subject line "twisty ties" before September 1st and you could be featured in the next Creative Playground newsletter.
