Issue: #20 august/2008

Greetings!

It has been one amazing transformation...not just for my body, but also for my mind. It is an incredible emotional ride to battle food and to tackle exercise while restructuring my lifestyle so that it incorporates more healthy choices.

Surprisingly enough the metamorphosis also took with it my philosophy on positive attitude and the power of positive thought. Allowing myself to grow and change and to follow the journey that organically flows through me. I am happier not only to fit into a size 6, but to have learned to follow a path that has led me to discover that the process in more valuable than the end result; that the lessons learned along the way inspire the thoughts that come next.

Each day take a little bit of time to remember that it is the creative process that builds creative character not the finished result.

inside the studio 8.08 so many directions of PLAY
Since I stepped off of the plane from my travel in Europe I have been consumed with ideas and creative what-ifs. I have been spending the time in my studio going down the lists and notes I made in my notebook trying them out and checking them off as I complete them.I have been simply inspired by the process of idea to completion.

For me it is all about the process...the proverbial creative journey I take from the moment I begin a scrapbook page to creating a fabric journal. Each movement of an embellishment, each cutting of a piece of paper or fabric, each and every stitch of the way, is a creative journey. I have come to learn that there truly is no right or wrong and that experimentation IS the road to success whether you come by it directly but more often it is the indirect inspiration that comes from such creative play that really amounts to personal creative successes.

I have been asked many times, "What do you do with an art journal?" and every time I answer with PLAY. Like a child needs a place to run, and jump and experience freedom, so do we as adults. An art journal is the place where you can creatively document your journey through the creative process. As you try new mediums, play with technique, experiment with color each one of those pages in your art journal be come a stepping stone for creative success. Your art journal never even needs to be seen by someone other than yourself...quite frankly it should remain a safe place for you to dream in creative possibility.

So this month start your own inspiration/art journal. Give yourself a creative place to play and listen how your inner voice of creativity unfolds as a visual representation of who you are.

One of the most amazing luxuries of hosting my own creative event is being able to assemble a "dream team" of incredibly talented artists from different parts of the globe, different backgrounds in art, and different walks of life. Each of them unfamiliar with each other, they join together and share with 250 woman their talents, techniques and process for creativity.
There is something so magical in the homogenized blending of so much passion between both teachers as well as students.

They absolutely inspire me with the energy they create!

trash to treasure
aug2008 black and white and worn all over?
wearable newspaper?  i love to recycle, but wearable?

Well you really need to check out how Jonelle Dansie, Designer of BabyCakes Hair Clippies from Murray, Utah as she walks you through a How-To etc. for "Inspired Thought" by making a BabyCakes Hair-Clippie using newspaper!

Supplies:
Newspaper
Acrylic Paint
Mod-Podge
One Metal Double-Prong Hair Clip (with small hole in lever end)
Misc. Scrapbook flowers:  Paper and Fabric
Small Decorative Brad

Tools:
Paint Brushes:  Sponge and Nylon Bristle
Nail Trimming Scissors (to get into tight places and make quick, precise snips)
Needle-Tool
Wax Paper
Spatula
Pencil

"I LOVE how the painted newspaper covered in Mod-Podge (glossy) feels almost like vinyl!"

How-To:
Layer acrylic paint over newspaper, using a sponge brush.  Let dry.

On unpainted side of paper, hand draw two simple flower shapes, one slightly smaller than the other. Leave a one inch or larger center in each.

Cut out flowers, cutting the sides of the petals first, then going back and free hand the petal tip.

Place flowers on wax paper and brush with Mod-Podge (I used the Nylon Bristle brush because I love the brush marks on the flower!) Gently lift flower off paper and set aside to dry.

Once completely dry, flip over and Mod-Podge other side. Again, gently lift flower off paper and set aside to dry.

Using the needle-tool carefully poke a hole in the center of each flower.

Layer all flowers together using brad to secure everything to the lever end (the end you squeeze) of metal hair clip.  Brad should be poking through the hole.  Wrap the brad prongs around each side of the hair clip to secure everything in place.

This was a really simple, quick project!  Including drying time, start to finish was just over an hour!
