Playing from the Heart
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Playing from the Heart, by playwright Charles Way, is inspired by the life of internationally acclaimed percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Evelyn begins having earaches at age 8, but even as her hearing worsens, her love of playing drums grows. Although she is eventually pronounced "profoundly deaf," she excels in the school orchestra and, with unshakeable determination, applies and is accepted by the Royal Academy of Music. The story is a tribute to all kids, whatever their circumstances, who find the inner strength to overcome all obstacles and pursue their passions.
Imagination Stage in Bethesda Maryland recently closed a very successful run of Playing from the Heart. See what critics had to say:
"Way's script - which has a seductive, memoir-style tone, no doubt because it was written with Glennie's cooperation - chronicles the vulnerable young dreamer's enthusiasm and setbacks...It's ultra-inspiring stuff, but Way avoids any power-of-positive-thinking triteness by anchoring the story firmly in sense of artistic wonder." -The Washington Post
"Charles Way's play is ingeniously conceived..." -The Washington Times
"If it's Charles Way's innovative and inspirational Playing from the Heart, you get an absorbing and evocative biographical drama about a young woman both from and of the sticks who proved them all wrong to become the premier percussion artist of her generation." -DC Theatre Scene
Dracula
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Don Fleming's adaptation of Dracula is based on Bram
Stoker's gothic novel. This faithful, fast-moving script tells the story of
Dracula's arrival in England and his ultimate demise by the hands of Jonathan and Mina Harker. Also available is Dracula:Origin, which was written as a companion piece to Dracula and can be performed in tandem with Dracula or as a separate piece. Dracula: Origin is the story of how Vlad, the Prince of Transylvania, struggles to free his people from the clutches of great Turkish warriors, and in the process is transformed into a bloodthirsty monster.
Both Dracula and Dracula: Origin scripts were originally developed for Seattle
Children's Theatre's Drama School Summer
Season, an acclaimed program in which student actors and theatre professionals
come together to produce polished plays.
