Meie märtsikuu Eesti köögi külaline on Peep Talving (MD, PhD, FACS,) kes on meditsiiniteaduste doktor traumakirurgia alal (2006, Karolinska Instituut), õppejõud Lõuna-California Ülikoolis Los Angeleses ning mitmete arstiteaduslike artiklite autor. Ta on sündinud Haapsalus 1965. a, alustas õpinguid Tartu Ülikooli arstiteaduskonnas ja jätkas Rootsis Karolinska Instituudis. Edasi tuli töö New Yorgis Bronxi munitsipaalhaiglas Groote Schuuri haiglas Kaplinnas Lõuna-Aafrikas. Praegu tegeleb ta õpetamise, ravimise ja teadustööga Los Angelese maakonna ja Lõuna-California Ülikooli haiglas. Doktor Talving on avaldanud arvukalt artikleid maailma teadusajakirjades, lisaks on ta kirjutanud oma kogemustest peatükke traumakirurgide käsiraamatutesse. Ennekõike hinnatakse tema teadmisi teravtraumade alal. Ta on Ameerika kirurgide ja Ameerika traumakirurgide liidu liige. Kohtumisel Los Angelese eestlastega räägib dr Talving traumakirurgi tööst Los Angelese maakonna keskhaiglas. Eesti majja jõuab dr Talving pärast 70 tundi kestnud vahetust. Our guest at the March Estonian Kitchen is Peep Talving, MD, PhD, FACS, who is a Critical Care Surgery doctor specialized in Trauma Surgery (2006 Karolinska Institute) at LAC + USC and author of numerous medical articles.
Born in Haapsalu in 1965, he began his studies at Tartu University Medical School and continued his studies in Sweden's Karolinska Institute. His work brought him to the Bronx Municipal Hospital in New York City, then the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, and is presently involved with teaching, healing and research at the Los Angeles County USC University Hospital. He has published numerous articles in professional publications throughout the world and has written many chapters about his personal experience in trauma surgery handbooks. Above all, he is recognized for his knowledge on the subject of treatment of acute trauma. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Trauma Surgeons Society.
Dr. Talving will be speaking about his work in trauma surgery at the Los Angeles County General Hospital.

Peeter Võsu dokumentaalfilm "Teekond läbi põgenikelaagrite Ameerikasse". Film on eesti keeles, ingliskeelsete subtiitritega. Filmis kirjeldavad Väino Riismandel, Fred Ise, Mai Hallingby (Vilms), Thomas Vaga ja mitmed teised oma põgenemist läheneva punaarmee eest läände. Ainus võimalus oli minna Saksamaale, kuid seal kestis sõda ja sageli tuli teekonda jätkata rindejoone all. Sellele järgnesid aastad põgenikelaagrites, enne kui avanes võimalus minna Ameerikasse. Mitmed, kes läksid sinna tühjade kätega, töötasid end uuesti üles ja andsid märkimisväärse panuse USA ühiskonda. Film sisaldab palju arhiivipilte ja visuaalseid materjale sündmuspaikadest. Kirjeldused on värvikad ja emotsionaalsed. Film pakub palju varem avaldamata fakte Eesti murrangulistest aegadest. Friday, March 30th, 2011
at 9 pm Estonian House Peeter Võsu's documentary, "The Road Through Emigrant Camps to America," is a film in Estonian with English subtitles. Väino Riismandel, Fred Ise, Mai Hallingby (Vilms), Thomas Vaga and many others speak of their flight to the West from the approaching Red Army. The only available destination was Germany, where war was raging and it was often necessary to pass through the front line battle zones to get to safety. That was followed by years of living in displaced persons (DP) camps until opportunities to emigrate to America presented themselves. Today there are many who arrived in America with nothing, pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and made significant contributions along the way to American society in the USA.
The film incorporates numerous archival pictures and visual materials of happenings at various locales. Event portrayals are rich in detail and deeply emotional. The film offers much heretofore unreleased information as well as facts about Estonia's most critical times. |

Director Dereck Hogan of the Office of Nordic and Baltic Affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State will speak and accept the Baltic Freedom Award on behalf of US Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton. Director Hogan served as Special Assistant to Secretary Colin Powell (2003-2004) and was Chief of the Political Section in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow (2007-2008). Other overseas assignments included the US Embassy in Minsk (2005-2007).
Representative Howard Berman has also been invited as a speaker.

Ikka on nii, et sel samal päeval, kui Los Angeles kihab Oscarite jagamise põnevusest, kus väike valitud hulk saab ka peost osa võtta, enamik aga tähistab seda kodus teleri ees, sätib eestlanegi end sel päeval pidurüüsse ja hoiab meeleolu kõrgel. Ei lähe ta aga Hollywoodi Boulevardile ootama, lootuses vilksamisi näha mõnda filmistaari, vaid tuleb Eesti Majja, et tähistada Eesti Vabariigi sünnipäeva.

It seems it's always the case, that on the same day that Los Angeles buzzes with excitement about the upcoming Oscars, where only a small, select few can attend the actual parties, most spend the evening at home in front of their TV. Estonians, too, get dressed in their party best and keep their spirits high. They don't, however, go to Hollywood Boulevard to wait and perhaps get the briefest glimpse of some film star, but come to the Estonian House to commemorate and celebrate Estonia's Independence Day birthday.

Päikseliselt soojal Lõuna-California kevadpäeval käisid kuulsad eesti näitlejad-lavastajad Andrus Vaarik ja Egon Nuter Los Angelese Eesti majas ning mängisid maha eesti tuntuima kirjaniku-näitekirjaniku-lavastaja Andrus Kivirähki juba kümme aastat populaarse etenduse "Meri ja Orav". Kirjanikuhärra oli ise ka kaasas ja lausus enne etenduse algust paar sõna. Publik itsitas ka seal, kus asi oli tõsine. Tuli välja, et meiekandi rahvas oligi kõige kõvema naeruga! On a sunny, warm Southern California late winter day two famous Estonian actor-producers Andrus Vaarik and Egon Nuter visited the Los Angeles Estonian House and presented Estonia's best known writer/playwright/producer Andrus Kivirähk's play "Meri ja Orav," which has been a most popular production for over ten years. The play's author was also present and gave a brief introduction to his play. The audience chuckled even through some intended serious moments. It turns out that folks in our part of the country laughed more than in any other, and in so doing, gave the performers thanks for a successful afternoon's entertainment. Tallinn-based electronic dance music producer Mord Fustang has captivated a worldwide audience as evidenced by the response on Youtube (over 2 million cumulative views), Soundcloud (over a million cumulative listens) and his impressive ascent on the Beatport electro house music charts. With complex arrangements laden with thunderously deep glitchy bass, Mr. Fustang is riding the electronic music vanguard as one of the more notable artists operating in the relatively new sub-genre known as "Complextro". In addition to crafting his own compositions, identifiable by ample doses of grandiose cathedral organ, disco basslines and melodic arpeggios, he's also being commissioned to add his touch to remixes for other artists including LMFAO (Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show cohorts). During a recent performance at The Avalon in Hollywood his connection with the pulsing crowd was obvious as he played custom live renditions of songs from his repertoire with the vibrant energy of an impassioned orchestral conductor fused with a punk rock guitarist. His ability to stir crowds into a frenzy almost went too far when one particularly overzealous fan attempted to jump up on the stage and nearly pulled Mr. Fustang's entire equipment rig to the ground. The course is aimed at the adult learners. This course is suitable for people, who want to improve their skills in learning Estonian. Students will gain introductory knowledge of Estonian and Estonian vocabulary and will be able to use the vocabulary covered during the course in everyday situations. The other aspects of the Estonian language (grammatical structure, etc.) will also be introduced. The course is 95 % web-based. There are 5 classroom meetings (or Skype-meetings) per course.

Academic Researcher for the Baltic Institute

The Baltic Institute has a Board of Directors formed to develop the framework for this organization and its objectives.
The Board is seeking an Estonian from an academic, research or legal background that would be able to participate fully in the meetings, which have been convened in Rockville, Maryland. The candidate should be able to travel to that location for the meetings, which have been occurring every other month or so, depending on the completion of ongoing development work with the other Board members. Interested persons may respond with a copy of their curriculum vitae to email The Baltic Institute (BI) is a non-partisan U.S. based research institute dedicated to the study of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) and their emergence as a region with common interests. BI provides a forum for scholarly research, writing and debate on key issues affecting the Baltic States; activities, interactions and heritage of the Baltic people throughout the world; and fostering world-wide recognition and knowledge about the Baltic states and its people.

From July 16 through the 20th, 2012, Tallinn University will host a Summer University Semester at Otepää which is intended for Estonians living abroad and their descendants whose Estonian language skills are not very good.  Tartu College Kanadas on otsustanud iga aasta välja anda stipendium, et võimaldada Põhja-Ameerika eesti noortel osavõttu Käärikul toimuvast Metsaülikoolist Eestis. Stipendiumi väärtus on $2000 CAD, mis katab sõidukulud, registreerimise Käärikul ja ka osa kohalikest kuludest Eestis viibimise jooksul. Kandidaat i. on osa võtnud Kotkajärve Metsaülikoolist ii. on 19-28 aastat vana iii. oskab eesti keelt rahuldavalt, s.t. on võimeline jälgima ja osa võtma Kääriku MÜ programmist iv. esitab taotluskirja MÜ juhatusele, milles annab lühikirjelduse oma senistest MÜ muljetest ja miks ta tahab osa votta Kääriku Metsaülikoolist. Stipendiumi taotlemise tähtaeg on 31. märts, 2012.  Uudiskirja lugejate poole pöördub Peterburi riikliku Ermitaazhi muuseumi vene kunsti vene portselani osakonna kuraator Jekaterina Hmelnitskaja, kes Fulbrighti stipendiaadina on parajasti USA Kongressi raamatukogus uurimas neid kunstnikke, kes 20. sajandi alguses töötasid keiserlikus portselanivabrikus ja 1917. a lahkusid Venemaalt. Vabriku selle ajajärgu väljapaistvaim skulptor oli eesti kujur August Timus (1865-1843). Kui ta 1920. aastail Tallinna naasis, lõi ta K. Pätsi, J. Laidoneri, J. Pitka, J. Poska, J. Tõnissoni, J. Kuperjanovi jt skulptuurportreed, kujundas Vabadussõja sangarite medali, oli veel paljude skulptuuride looja. Kõik tema tööd, mis Eesti muuseumides leidusid, hävitati 1940. aastail.
Mitmeaastase otsimise järel on kunstiteadlane Hmelnitskaja leidnud erakogudest J. Kuperjanovi portree ja medali (juuresolevail piltidel). Nüüd soovib ta teavet, et kas keegi USA eestlastest teab ehk Timuse eelnimetatud kunstitöödest, või on kusagil era- vm kunstikogus koguni midagi säilinud, fotosid jm. Kunstiteadlane sooviks leiduvat materjali oma August Timusest valmivas raamatus kasutada.

Peterburi riikliku Ermitaazhi muuseumi vene kunsti vene portselani osakonna kuraator
 My name is Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya and I'm curator of the porcelain and ceramic collection in the State Hermitage Museum in Russia. Currently I'm a Fulbright scholar at the Library of Congress researching artists who worked in the Imperial porcelain factory at the beginning of the 20th century and left the country in 1917. At that time the chief sculptor of the factory was Estonian sculptor August Timus (1865-1943). After returning to Tallinn in the 1920s he created sculptural portraits of K. Päts, J. Laidoner, J. Pitka (1872-1944), J. Poska, J. Tõnisson, Ratasepp Jakobson, J. Kuperjanov, as well as the medal for the heroes of the War of Independence and many other sculptural works. Nearly everything kept in Estonian museums was destroyed in the 1940s. My friends and colleagues in Estonian museums and archives tried to help me in finding some of the works by Timus, but almost everything was destroyed.
After searching for a few years, I finally found a medal and a portrait of J. Kuperjanov held in private collections. Please see attached files. Nevertheless, I do have hope that maybe some of these portraits may still exist in private homes of Estonian people living in the United States. I will be very thankful for any help and/or suggestions with respect to whom I can possibly contact or who might know or remember any information about August Timus which can be used in a book about him.
