Relay For Life...
Illuminating The Battle Against Cancer. |
|
The American Cancer Society's signature event began in 1985. Dr. Gregory Klatt of Tacoma, Washington decided to run for 24 hours at his local high school.
The idea... to show that cancer never sleeps. He raised $27,000 that year.
Today over 4,000 communities run their own relay. They've raised over $1,000,000,000 to fight cancer.
Kokomo's relay begins at 5:45 P.M. at the Kokomo High School track on Friday, June 20th. The goal this year... $290,000.
111 teams registered. That's over a 30% increase compared with 2007. They ask each team to keep someone on the track at all times.
If you're not a "walker" you can participate by helping UM men serve a pancake and sausage breakfast. Plan on being there at 5:30 A.M. until about 10:00 A.M. on Saturday morning, June 21st.
All money from the free will offering goes to the American Cancer Society.
The men NEED your help. They're short staffed.
Call Dick Emry now at 453-5122 to get on board.
See you there. |

Barna... Channeling The Teens'
Pinch-Of-This Pinch-Of-That Mind Set. |
|
Without intentional direction many young people may ride out their teen years in fruitless experimentation.
Barna concluded... "helping them (teens) connect with God, learn about their faith, and serve others in a loving relational environment are their desires for a church".
But he says that it takes more than just going to church,,, knowing some Bible stories, and being the friend of a youth pastor.
You go deeper, you connect with a teen as an individual... "as a mentor". For example you help shape and develop their intellect and vocational passions... cultivate their curiosity of life.
Then you make an impact.

| THE CATHOLIC SPIRIT. |
|
When you talk about Christianity... denominations, congregations... it's easy to get lost in the details.
But no one knows which worship style is best. And where you live combined with family practices often determines where you go to church.
The telling question really becomes... is your heart right with God.
- Do you believe in his perfections, wisdom, justice?
- Do you walk by faith and look to the eternal versus the temporal?
You're really asking... Do you love your God with all your heart, mind, soul... with all your strength?
Do you love your neighbor as yourself?
If you believe these 2 things then how and where you worship is secondary. Your heart is where it belongs. You're mindful to keep your focus on Jesus.
Having cleared possible confusion,,, "cobwebs" then the catholic spirit boils down to one of love.
You love and embrace all friends, neighbors, strangers, and even enemies.

| GRACE MEN HELP BUILD "BASIC UTILITY VEHICLE" |
It all starts Saturday, June 7th. Then, a small group of Grace men check out the shakedown program for BUV construction.
It takes place at the Institute for Affordable Transportation in Indianapolis.
The gang gets a taste of the process while the company assesses their skills. If all goes well they'll plan more missions.
The BUV is versatile. Use it to haul construction material, taxi people, or haul goods to market.
The design makes use of materials generally available in the 3rd world. For example from junk pick ups use the rear axle and differential. The 3 wheel vehicles use a 10 horse power gas or diesel engine.
Plans call for providing these vehicles for the mission field, and starting mini-factories for BUV manufacture in those countries.
Men scheduled to go June 7 are: Dave Brownfield, Ralph Cory, Kirk Grotenhuis, and Chris Hedges and Paul Zimmerman.
