Dear Friends,

UMC COMPLETES GENERAL CONFERENCE

i am thankful for several things about our General Conference.  First, that the global chief legislative body of our denomination, which meets every four years, managed to evade the local headlines.  You may remember that often advocacy groups seek to use the opportunity of this event to pressure the delegates and grab headlines, only to embarrass hoosier United Methodists.

I was able to listen on the web to many of the opening day speeches and presentations and rejoiced to see recognition that our church has its tensions, like many denominations, and also that the UMC is global, which many of us have trouble appreciating.

I liked the appeals to our Wesley heritage made fresh for our day.  For example, the General Rules:
  • Do no harm
  • Do good
  • Keep in love with God

And finally, I heard afresh a renewed commitment to calling United Methodists to commit ourselves to both personal holiness and to work to correct social evils in our world.

I hope you take the opportunity to:

WOMEN OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
Added GraceKUO is sponsoring a free event on May 17, 2008, from 2-4 PM at the UAW Hall on Hoffer St.   The event is called, "Women Overcoming Obstacles" and is being chaired by Pam Grohman. Our special guests for the day are Brooke Mooreland and her mother Shona.

Brooke's mother Shona was a victim of domestic violence, which started the family's nightmare of living in  3 different homeless shelters in 3 years.  Through all of this, Brooke has  persevered and rose above a situation that she couldn't control.  In an essay about her life, Brooke wrote:  "I stared at the wall, the wall of my life - I wondered how it felt to not have to wake up in the middle of the nigh because of hunger pains or too feel my fingers grow numb as I shower in ice cold water."  Life was difficult for Brooke; there were many obstacles in her path.  Yet her spirit was never broken.  The worse things became, the more she rose to the challenge.
