Philanthropy Dives into Social Media

Ashley JPegAs a digital marketer I have great respect for social media and the role it plays in our fast-paced world. It's not only understood, but accepted that companies target consumers through outlets such as Facebook and Twitter - after all, why shouldn't they, this is where their audience lives! You'll find that most respected organizations have a presence in these online communities, and are actively engaging with consumers to provide relevant resources they demand - this includes non-profit and cause related entities.

It's great stuff! As one of the coordinators for an annual event to raise funds for diabetes research, I can attest to how much of an impact social media can have on generating excitement around such efforts. Though lucky for us, the nature of this fundraiser generates its own buzz. After all, who wouldn't donate a couple bucks to people falling from the sky at upwards of 120 mph, all to help find a cure for diabetes?

That's right! It's a skydiving event called Jump for Diabetes. There are a number of ways we're raising money, including pledged jumps, raffle tickets, and more. This year the event is being held on August 14-15 at Skydive Pennsylvania in Mercer, PA.

We're utilizing social media more than ever to get the word out - collecting donations via PayPal through our Facebook page, Web Site, and SkydiveChick.com blog for those who are unable to attend the event but still wish to donate. We're partnering with a number of high-profile organizations within the skydiving community to promote the event on their blogs and Facebook pages. So far
we're still in the planning stages, but we believe this year will bring record numbers - participants, donations, skydives - and we can't wait to see what the power of social media can do for this great cause!
