President's Letter
We've heard plenty about an economic stimulus for months, a result of tough economic times. In this e-newsletter, we'd like to change the dialogue to talk about career stimulus.
Now is a good time to strengthen your skills, broaden your knowledge and maybe even get that Accredited Public Relations (APR) credential that gives you our profession's stamp of excellence.
If you ramp up your professional development and networking activities with us, you'll be in good company. Our first two programs this year have attracted a total of 255 attendees. (Please watch for our e-blasts and check our website for scheduling information.) Our chapter's membership ranks have topped 300, meaning we will have one more delegate (for a total of four) at the profession's national assembly where decisions are made about the policies and standards that guide our profession. More important, it means more people for you to add to your network.
Later this year, we'll conduct a professional development workshop (see item below). Want to get involved? A committee is being formed right now. There are other chapter volunteer opportunities as well, which won't take a lot of your time, but will help you meet other professionals.
So join us, get involved, and visit our Web site for details about our programs and APR preparation sessions. Rick Batyko, APR President, PRSA Greater Cleveland | |

Social media guru Shankman rocks Cleveland
PRSA Greater Cleveland had a record turnout of 160 at its February lunch meeting, which featured the popular social media guru and founder of HARO, Peter Shankman.
Speaking on "Non-Traditional Thinking in a Technology-Driven World," Shankman (shown between Chrissy Sparrow, Styl Styk Hair Part-ner, on the left, and Kate Eidam, Falls Communications and PRSA board member, on the right) shared his insights and experiences on viral marketing and social media, rationale behind why organizations should or should not be using these tactics and how they are integrated into our daily lives.
Proving the power of social media, audience members - including @jewelsann (Julie Cajigas) and @shoesalwaysfit (Paige Clowser) - jumped on Twitter and posted tweet updates on the event, which Shankman pulled up live on screen. Followers of PRSA Cleveland's Twitter account (@PRSACleveland) were able to post questions, which were posed to Peter live during the event.
A special thanks to Marcus Thomas for sponsoring the event. If you're not already following Peter Shankman, visit www.shankman.com or www.helpareporter.com. |
