Summary of Price Increases in Round Four...
The following is a summary of price increases in round four for 2011. It is interesting to note the time lag between the independent lubricant manufacturer's price increases and those of the majors.

Crude - Base Oil Spread

The spread between crude oil (WTI) and base oil continues to climb. Whereas the spread was $1.92 in June of 2011, as of this morning, it's $2.32 a gallon, as shown below:

Date

$/Gallon

9-Jun-11

1.92

9-Jul-11

2.10

9-Aug-11

2.32

The average spread since the start of JobbersWorld reporting on spreads in August of 2004 is now $1.32 a gallon. Based on this, it's clear the spread is trending up.

At the same time, there may be value to reflect on the lessons learned in 2008 and 2009. This is when the spread also increased due to a spike in the price of crude. But when crude reached its peak and started to drop, base oil prices continued to climb for a short time after, thus overshooting the typical spreads when crude plummeted. This result in a round of price decreases on base oils that compressed the spread to a more rational level. Because we are now seeing the spread increase while crude prices are on a decline, we may once again be looking at market conditions where base oil prices are staged to retreat.

Marketers Sound Off
So what are marketers saying about the current industry dynamics where crude oil prices are going down, base oil prices are static, and finished lubricants are now moving into their fourth round? In the words of one marketer we recently spoke with, who seemed to sum up what we are hearing from others...

..."Crude falling, base stock inventories on the rise, economy going down the toilet, stock market crashing. Considering this, it would appear the only reason we are now seeing a fourth round of lubricant price increase is so suppliers have something to give back on the decrease that many anticipate considering current market conditions and where we appear to be heading."
