Motiva Moves Base Oil Price

Motiva announced an increase effective 6/10

Star 4 will increase by $0.55 a gallon

Star 6 & 12 will move up by $0.50 a gallon

So what's JobbersWorld hearing? In the words of one base oil buyer;
"I can officially now confirm, this is the most volatile I have seen the base oil market in 17 years."

....and "I believe it will get worse over the next 60 days before conditions begin to improve."
A Second in What Could be Round 4...
U.S. Lubricants Also Announces a Price Increase
In addition to Advanced Lubrication Specialties, you can now add U.S. Lubricants to the list of companies announcing another finished lubricant increases in 2011.  The price of U.S. Lubricants products will increase by 7 to 8% effective June 20th.

Price Increase - Round 4?
As reported JobbersWorld reported on Tuesday, Advanced Lubrication Specialties (ALS) announced it is "forced to raise prices due to the continuing rise of raw materials." The increase will be effective on June 27, 2011. Bulk and packaged lubricants (with the exception of synthetics) will increase by $0.40 a gallon. Bulk and packaged hydraulic oils will increase by $0.30 a gallon, and synthetics will increase by $0.50 a gallon.

The Crude - Base Oil Spread
The Crude Oil - Base Oil spread reached $2.47 a gallon at the close of business yesterday, up from $2.04 a gallon on May 9, 2011.

What Oil Would You Recommend?

Although Forest Gump was certainly not speaking about car shows when he innocently uttered the words, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get," JobbersWorld got a real surprise when we left the office last night to find one of the chocolates at the car show parked on the street outside of our offices in Metuchen, NJ was a 1940 John Deere Model L farm tractor. The second surprise came when we asked the owner what oil he uses in the small, but strong 2-cyclinder engine powering not only the tractor, but also the PTO (circa 1940) that powers saws and other farm equipment connected to the tractor via a belt.

So here is a question for the CLSs, tribologists, weekend mechanics and others reading JobbersWorld.  What type and grade of oil is recommended for the engine and steering box in this vintage machine? And, most importantly, the owner of the tractor asks, "Where can I buy the right oil for the steering box?"

JobbersWorld will post the name of the person and/or company first to answer these questions in our next issue.
