ExxonMobil First Major in Round Three

ExxonMobil announced an increase of 7% a gallon on lubes and $0.06 a gallon on grease. This increase is effective June 16, 2011.
Time Between Increases (TBI)

Independent lubricant manufacturers and marketers commonly express concerns about the time differences from when they announce price increases and when the majors do, and JobbersWorld has been hearing more about these concerns over the past few months.

The reason for these concerns is that independents are reliant on the majors for base oil supply. As such, when base oil prices increase, independents are typically required to push through finished lubricant increases in relatively short order.  Extended delays in the majors doing the same are of concern to independents because it compresses the price differentials between the majors and independent brands. As the gap in price decreases and the gap in time increases, the major's have an opportunity to capture market share.

To understand why the level of noise about the gap is increasing, JobbersWorld took  a look at the time between independent and major price increases in 2011. Whereas the average year-to-date  is 25 days, one reason for the increased talk about the gap may be the 32 days in the second round of price increases occurring in March and April. Another reason, however, may be that whereas in the past the majors were often the first to lead the way to higher prices, there appears to be a trend developing where independents are the first to move.  And being the first to move can be a scary place if you are not used to it.
