ExxonMobil Hikes Prices on Finished Lubricants
    Let the Fireworks Begin!

While most lubricant marketers were likely getting ready for a big 4th of July weekend and barbeque, you can bet some felt they had water poured on their coals when they got the letter from ExxonMobil that prices were once again going up. Yep, only 75 days after it announced its last price increase, ExxonMobil advised its marketers on June 29/30 there would be yet another price increase effective August 1. This increase pushes the marketer buy-in price for ExxonMobil conventional lubricants up by 6%, and synthetics up by 3%. This translates to a price increase of roughly $0.28 and $0.58 a gallon for conventional and synthetic lubricants, respectively. And when you factor in its April price increases of $0.36 and $0.64 a gallon, the buy-in price for ExxonMobil for conventional and synthetics lubricants at the marketer level has increased $0.64 and $1.22 a gallon, respectively, since May 16th.

In the view of many of the marketers Jobbers World spoke with about this most recent price increase, the reason given for the increase was the same as always and may as "well have been a form letter." They say ExxonMobil attributed it to the higher cost of goods sold (i.e., base oil, additives, packaging). But some marketers are not buying it. In their view, the price of base stock has only gone up about 6 to 7 cents a gallon since ExxonMobil's last price increase and the price of lubricant additives has not risen substantially since that time either. They know, because a number of marketers also manufacturer private label lubricants and have a real-time handle on the cost of goods sold.

But beyond questioning the reason for the price increase, the ExxonMobil marketers Jobbers World spoke with say they have several other more pressing concerns on their minds about the increase. The first being the competitive response and how this impacts an ExxonMobil marketer's ability to go back to its customers only two months after they told them about the last price increase to tell them about the next. And to add insult to injury, they say that, whereas usually a marketer gets 45 days to break the bad news to its customers about price increases, in this case, they realistically have less than 30 days when you factor in the holiday weekend.

Jobbers World Online News Briefs will be monitoring the competitive response closely over the next few weeks and report any additional price movements to its subscribers as they occur. In addition, the August issue of Jobbers World will feature an in-depth analysis of finished lubricant price movements over the last year and what they could mean for lubricant marketers over the next year.
