Buyer Beware of Tractor Hydraulic Fluid

Tractor Hydraulic Fluid (THF), also referred to as Universal Tractor Hydraulic Transmission Fluid (UTF), is a unique multifunctional lubricant used in farm and industrial tractors and construction equipment. It acts as a hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, and gear oil.

But, according to some lubricant marketers and other industry experts, the Deere specification listed on some THFs is obsolete, so, although farmers may pay less for the fluid when they buy it, they could end up paying significantly more in equipment repairs by using it.

  • April has been an ugly month for most lubricant marketers and the reason why is that within the last week all but one major oil company increased its price of finished lubricants $0.28 to a whopping $0.64 a gallon. The average bump was about $0.35 a gallon. And the price increases didn't stop with the majors. Several of the largest independent lubricant manufacturers in the country also announced a price increase of $0.20 to $0.22 a gallon. Most of these increases take effect within 30 days. So hang on to your hats and expect May to be an ugly month for lubricant buyers. Your prices too will likely go up.
