Time Off- What's That? |
Statistically speaking, do you know how much vacation time (legally required)
is enjoyed by employees around the world? France wins with 7 weeks for employees followed closely by Denmark offering 6 weeks. If you're employed in Argentina, Austria, and Finland, you can enjoy up to 35 days. China, United States and Australia have no legal requirements to offer vacation, but typically Aussies receive 28 days and Americans receive 10. Check out the vacation requirements around the world.
Taking time off does more than just recharge your energizer batteries. It increases the opportunity for creative thinking, leading to innovation, which in today's world, leads to economic survival and ...dare we say...increased productivity and PROFITABILITY?
How productive are you really? If you're working 70 hours a week, how much of that time is spent zoning out over your desktop due to fatigue, retracing steps to determine where you left that folder, phone number, your list of "to do's" or car keys? Not only is productivity an issue when you're tired and run down, so is safety. People who are sleep-deprived are as dangerous on the road as drunk drivers. And don't even get me started on spilling the coffee over the keyboard...

Slow Down to Gear Up |
|
Time off? Some of you may be in the growing ranks of the unemployed and have plenty of time on your hands now. OR you could be one of the layoff survivors who are working overtime to keep up with the lack of available staff. In either situation, how you use that precious commodity of time is critical to your success, health and happiness. Let's get cracking to see what companies and individuals are doing to manage this thing called TIME!

First, to a business assessment - what have you accomplished within the past year? What value has your business brought your customers, its industry and our environment? Create a worksheet of the functional areas of your business - marketing, sales, new or improved products, customer service (internal and external), distribution/delivery/shipping, accounting processes. Make a column for each functional business area and in each column, list each improvement made within the past year from today. When you look at the categories, determine which areas have the most and least amount of activity. Is it a balanced picture? From this worksheet, determine the areas with little activity (growth, improvement) and determine what efforts need to be made in each area for growth and improvement. Remember, good is not good enough. Someone somewhere is getting GREAT at what your company may have been "good" at for years!
This same technique works personally as well. Make a list of different categories for yourself, including categories for personal development, FUN, family, career. What areas have limited activity within the past year? What areas need immediate attention for health, personal satisfaction, well-being? As an individual within a family or business unit, ask yourself, what difference have you made in the lives of those around you - internal and external customers, vendors and suppliers, managers, coworkers. How have you made it easy to do business with you? For your family, friends, and neighbors, how have you made it easy to live with or by you?
Set SMART goals to get your life and business in balance: specific, measurable, aligned, realistic, and time dimensioned. This minute only comes around once in a lifetime....what will you do with the remaining minutes you have? In order to use them wisely, conduct your self-assessment, take corrective action and live the life you deserve!

Thoughts to Ponder |
|
"Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you." Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967)
"Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend." Theophrastus (372 BC - 287 BC), from Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers
"We all learn by experience but some of us have to go to summer school." Peter De Vries
"It's a sure sign of summer if the chair gets up when you do." Walter Winchell (1897 - 1972)
"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen." Leonardo Da Vinci
