NEWS ALERT

PROTECTING YOURSELF AND THOSE AROUND YOU

Fire Extinguishers
They're not just for fire!
If a gunman is coming toward you and you still have some time and distance between you, grab and spray the fire extinguisher directly into the path of the gunman. The air will literally become so thick, the gunman will not be able to see inches in front of his face. These few seconds may be all the extra time you need to gain your exit to safety.

Greetings!

Early this morning as I heard the news about the recent school shooting in Park County Colorado, I was determined to send this notice to help protect you and those around you. I had first thought about doing it when I heard about the shooting in Canada recently. When I returned from lunch, I learned that there was yet another shooting at a school today in Lakeland, Florida. In the same moments as I write this now, there's another lock-down at yet another school - in Hazel Park, Michigan. I'm stopping everything now to send this notice in hopes that you'll never have to use any of this information, but in the event you find yourself in a horrifying situation with a gunman nearby, these tips just might save your life.

These tips come from Escape School, a community service provided by Service Corporation International. Donna Hastings of SCI first introduced me to Escape School and I had the honor of working with them on several projects. The website has great information designed to protect you, and you'll often see and hear facilitated Escape School programs in schools and communities throughout the U.S.

Running for Safety

If you know your surroundings well (such as in a school environment), you should know which (class) rooms have windows and which ones don't. When you're running for safety, run to the room with a window. Grab anything that's heavy enough to crash the window. DON'T think about the cost of the computer, the desk, the lamp, JUST CRASH IT THROUGH THE WINDOW AND GET OUT. Run as far from the building as you can.

Trapped

If you find yourself trapped in a room without windows such as a restroom, then take lotion or creme from your purse or soap from the dispenser and spread it all over the floor near the door where the gunman may enter. The gunman will slip and fall giving you a moment's chance to escape.

Cell Phone Use

In many of these school shootings, parents interviewed were first informed by their children who "text-messaged" them. In fact, a recent kidnapping victim was rescued after sending her mom a text message from her kidnapper's phone. If your kids have cell phones, they know how to text message. But if YOU don't know how to access a text message on your cell phone, you'll never be able to read one either. Get someone to show you how to use this life-saving feature on your cell phone today.

Our world is full of beauty and wonderful things, but we also know that the world we live in is capable of producing horrific events, both natural and man- made. Preparation, courage, and faith are needed.
