Rated: 92 points by Stephen Tanzer
"Bright red-ruby. Aromas of blackberry, graphite and game, plus a smoky, flinty note winemaker Drash describes as "Black Cat firecracker." Juicy and mineral-driven, offering an enticing combination of density and clarity. This very sexy wine should give early pleasure but also age well."

Winemaker's Notes:
Our 2006 Napa Valley Merlot is an intense ruby red. The nose is filled with scents of tangerines, roses, and tobacco. The mid-palate is a tightly integrated mixture of blackberries, plums, and leather. Fine-grained tannins and great acidity hold the wine together as the finish melts into earthy cocoa and cassis. This Merlot will be at its peak from 2013 through 2016.

This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features!
Eclectic Reds

  • 2009 Girard, Artistry, Proprietary Blend, Was $46.00, Now $39.00: "Our 2009 Artistry has aromas of toasted hazelnuts and festive Christmas spices. Boysenberries and currants saturate the palate aside flavors of exotic bing cherries. Well-structured tannins round out this vintage with a beautiful, tobacco and spice finish. Enjoy this wine with your favorite cut of meat or a tasty spaghetti with marinara. It is an ideal wine selection for making an impact on your family and friends!"
  • 2009 Sequoia Grove, Was $38.00, Now $30.00:  Dark black in color, the nose gives aromas of fresh raspberries and ripe, red cherries with notes of vanilla and cocoa powder. Background notes come through over time of roasted coffee bean and a touch of pencil lead. The palate is smooth and rich with ripe, developed tannins giving the wine a full arc in the mouth and giving flavors of blackberry and a hint of smoky, sweet oak.
  • 2009 La Jota Vineyard Co., Howell Mountain, 94 pts., Parker; $60.00:  "The 2008 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is full of spice, dark berry fruit, minerality, tobacco, and rich tannins."
  • 2009 Vineyard, 7 & 8, "7" Spring Mountain, 92 pts., Parker; $75.00: The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon 7 comes across as soft, sexy and opulent. Silky tannins frame a core of expressive fruit in this polished, understated wine. Flowers, spices and dark red fruit are layered into the deep finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
  • 2008 Dunn Vineyards, 96 pts., Parker; $89.00: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is simply extraordinary. Layers of dark fruit, flowers, licorice, spices and mint are beautifully woven together. With time in the glass the wine's striking inner perfume takes center stage. Tar, smoke, flowers, red berries and licorice are some of the nuances that reappear on the finish, while gorgeous aromatics are laced throughout. I could go on..."
  • 2008 Antica, Townsend Vineyard, 94 pts., Wine Enthusiast; $95.00: "...Initially restrained, this dense ruby/purple-colored wine offers up notes of forest floor, blackberries and cassis along with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and attractive elegance and purity. Multilayered with sweet tannin, it should age nicely for 15+ years.
  • 2009 Araujo, Red Wine, Altagracia, 92 pts., Parker; $111.00: "The 2009 Altagracia is a rich, textured wine layered with perfumed red fruit. Ripe, silky tannins frame the long, exceptional finish. The 2009 impresses for its breadth and volume, all while maintaining a very classic profile. The delineation of the 2008 is missing, but in exchange readers will find a soft, supple wine loaded with class. In 2009 the blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Malbec. Anticipated maturity 2012-2019."
  • 2008 Dominus, Proprietary Red, 99 pts., Parker; $209.00: Made in a more masculine style, the 2008 Dominus has all of that along with bigger body and more structure, fat, density and texture. Both are brilliant wines and they represent the finest back-to-back vintages for Dominus since 2001 and 2002 or 1990 and 1991. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for 25-30 years.
  • 2008 Checkerboard, Diamond Mountain, 91-93 pts., Parker; $219.00: The highly anticipated new vintage of Checkerboard is now available. The flagship bottling is comprised of 99% Cab and 1% Petit Verdot and is made by Martha McClellan. Like the '07, the '08 vintage showcases the depth and black fruit that comes off the estate vineyard in Diamond Mountain but has even more focus and fuller tannin than the previous vintage.
  • 2008 Bond, St. Eden, Oakville, 94 pts., Parker; $390.00: "The 2008 St. Eden is one of the richest, fleshiest and best-balanced of the 2008s in the Bond portfolio. Dark red fruit, flowers, minerals and spices are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. The 2008 has the mid-palate pliancy that is less evident in some of the other 2008s here. There is plenty of focus as well, especially on the long, saline finish. Tar, smoke and licorice add the final notes of complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028."

The vineyards of Chateau Bonnet were planted during the 16th century, by the Reynier family, wealthy merchants from Libourne. In a mere 30 years, the landscape around the house was transformed, as vines replaced forest on the surrounding slopes. Château Bonnet lies to the North of the Entre-Deux-Mers, on the clay-chalk slopes of the commune of Grézillac, overlooking the Dordogne valley some 10km south of Saint Emilion. The estate dates back to the 17th century; when André Lurton took over in 1956, it comprised 30 hectares of vineyard, which he immediately undertook to renovate and develop.

Normal retail price is $14.00 per bottle, but you only pay 1 penny upon spending $100 on any wine purchase.

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees

From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr.  is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:

"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."

Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep  we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar.

This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled.  Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised.  As you are aware,  all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm.  This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar.
