2008 Pinot Noir Reserve
Review by Jay Miller Wine Advocate #191 Oct 2010 Rating 98 Drink: 2012 - 2020 The 2008 Pinot Noir Reserve is darker in color with aromas of violets, incense, cinnamon, black cherry, and black raspberry. Richer and more structured than the Willamette Valley cuvee, it will evolve for 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2020. Visiting with Rollin Sole, the head man at Argyle, is always a great learning experience. He is currently focused on Riesling, but that is a story for another day. As usual, the sparkling wine offerings are among the best made in the USA.
Rated: 90 points by Stephen Tanzer
2008 Pinot Noir Reserve. Deep red. Oak-spiced red berries and cherry on the nose, with a smoky note that picks up steam with air. Round and attractively sweet, offering plump cherry and raspberry flavors and no rough edges. Shows good tangy cut and bite on the finish, which echoes the cherry note. This is delicious right now.
Wine Spectator Score: 91 Issue: Dec 31, 2010 2008 Pinot Noir Reserve. This fragrant red offers raspberry, rose petal and white pepper aromas, following through on the open textured palate and lingering well against lightly sandy tannins. Drink now through 2018. 7000 cases made. 2007 Argyle Riesling, Eola-Amity Hills Wine Spectator Score 86

This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features!
Eclectic Reds
- 2010 Justin, Sauvignon Blanc, Paso Robles; $15.00: Wine is a pale greenish gold in color with gentle, youthful aromas of lime, lemon, chalk and just a touch of kiwi. It's a fluid wine with lively acidity and flavors of lime, lemon and mineral that is slightly drying rather than juicy. A moderately long finish is dominated by acidity and fresh lime.
- 2011 Ferrari Carano, Pinot Grigio, Russian River Valley, Was $17.00, Now $15.00: "With its delicate aromas and delicious flavors, our Ferrari-Carano Pinot Grigio is a perfect white wine for spring and summer sipping. The newly-labeled Pinot Grigio, sister wine to the Ferrari-Carano Siena, offers inviting creamy pear, key lime, subtle vanilla and green apples on the nose, complemented by honeydew melon, citrus and a hint of peaches on tasting. The pleasant mouthfeel is balanced by a light citrus finish that is delicate yet vibrant."
- 2010 Ferrari Carano, Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, Was $24.00, Now $18.00: This full-bodied Chardonnay has delicious aromas of apple, orange blossom, pear, marshmallow and a hint of graham cracker, perfectly balanced by flavors of lemon, peach, honey, and lingering, creamy toasted oak notes.
- 2011 Elk Cove, Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley; $19.00: "With scents of sweet pear and almonds, fresh acidity, and flavors of baking spice and ripe peaches that linger on the palate, Elk Cove's 2010 pinot gris is a definite crowd pleaser." Portland Monthly (September 30, 2011)
- 2011 Elk Cove, Pinot Noir, Rose', Willamette Valley; $15.50: The 2011 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir Rosé is fragrant with white flowers and showing freshness with aromas of watermelon and sweet, red strawberry fruit! Enjoy this crisp, light, simply refreshing wine all by itself on a bright sunny day or pair it with succulent shellfish or roast chicken. Bon appétit!
- 2010 Chateau Sainte Marguerite Rose' L'Espirit, Cotes de Provence; $23.00: Red fruits dominate this rich wine. It has great balance and a smooth texture, with red plum, loganberry and caramel flavors. With its structure, it could even age a year.
- 2010 St. Supery, Chardonnay, Oak Free, Napa Valley, Was $20.00, Now $18.00: The 2010 Chardonnay presents with a brilliant pale yellow hue, while opulent aromas of mango, white peach and nectarine overlay a hint of key lime and lemon zest. Flavors of cantelope and stonefruit carry through a long round even profile that is vibrant and lightly crisp. This is a fine and elegant wine. Enjoy!
- 2010 ZD Wines, Chardonnay, California; $35.00: Aromas of pineapple, guava and pear mingle with hints of vanilla and orange blossoms. The palate is full bodied and rich with the perfect balance between fruit, oak and acidity. Like many ZD Chardonnays, this wine is a joy to drink when young but will also age and develop beautifully for many years to come. Enjoy!
- 2010 Cakebread Cellars, Chardonnay, Napa Valley; $45.00: "Our 2010 Napa Valley Chardonnay boasts an attractive light golden-straw color and fresh, lightly buttery, ripe golden apple, pear and citrus aromas, complemented by seductive vanilla and cinnamon/nutmeg scents from oak aging and subtle yeast tones from lees contact. Lush, concentrated and creamy on the palate, its ripe apple, melon, bright citrus and baking spice flavors culminate in a long, beautifully structured finish boasting crisp acidity and zesty mineral and spice tones."
- 2010 Orin Swift, Mannequin, White Blend, Napa Valley; $35.00: Beautiful shades of deep gold and amber fill the glass letting loose tropical aromas of ripe peach and pear married with subtle French oak. The entry of the wine is fully mouth-coating and offers a viscosity that leads effortlessly into an intense mid-palette with the colorful acidity of fresh pineapple. The finish of the wine is soft and subtle with great length and volume.

For Your Appreciation: Thank You!
Pay one penny for one bottle of Chateau Bonnet, Bordeaux Blanc or Rouge upon spending over $100.00 on any wine purchase. Normal price is $14.00 per bottle.
The vineyards of Chateau Bonnet were planted during the 16th century, by the Reynier family, wealthy merchants from Libourne. In a mere 30 years, the landscape around the house was transformed, as vines replaced forest on the surrounding slopes. Château Bonnet lies to the North of the Entre-Deux-Mers, on the clay-chalk slopes of the commune of Grézillac, overlooking the Dordogne valley some 10km south of Saint Emilion. The estate dates back to the 17th century; when André Lurton took over in 1956, it comprised 30 hectares of vineyard, which he immediately undertook to renovate and develop.

Normal retail price is $14.00 per bottle, but you only pay 1 penny upon spending $100 on any wine purchase.

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr. is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:
"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."
Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar. This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled. Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised. As you are aware, all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm. This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar. |
