This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features!
Chardonnay
- 2010 Greystone Cellars, California; $10.00: Winemaker's notes: The Greystone Cellars Chardonnay vineyard sites were specifically chosen for their tropical nature. Cool Santa Barbara grown grapes provide crisp citrus texture, while the Lodi grown grapes give the Chardonnay rich, juicy flavors. A relatively cool California summer allowed for maximum flavor development. The warmer areas arrived at the end of August whereas the coastal fruit languished in cooling fog until the middle of September.
- 2010 David Bruce, Santa Lucia Highlands; $15.00: Winemaker's Notes: Aromas of mangoes, white peaches, apricot, and and pineapple caress the mind into believing it was a summer day on the ocean beach. Follow that with flavours of toasted walnuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, apricots, peaches, caramel, and toasted bread. Enjoy with a variety of foods from asian cuisine, salads, soups, and even creamy dishes.
- 2010 Ferrari Carano, Sonoma County; Was $24.00, Now $18.00: The 2010 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay from Sonoma County has superior lots of wine from our vineyards in Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Carneros. This full-bodied Chardonnay has delicious aromas of apple, orange blossom, pear, marshmallow and a hint of graham cracker, perfectly balanced by flavors of lemon, peach, honey, and lingering, creamy toasted oak notes.
- 2010 La Crema, Russian River Valley; $26.00: Winemaker's notes: Look for bright orange and stone fruit aromas, punctuated by butterscotch and caramel corn. In the mouth, vibrant notes of lemon zest and mineral blend with toasty shortbread overtones. With a lovely, supple structure, this wine pairs beautifully with food.
- 2009 Chateau Montelena Winery, Napa Valley; $50.00: In the glass, this wine has a classic Chardonnay hue of pale golden straw. The bouquet draws you in with delicate nuances of wet stones, lichee, white peach, orange blossoms, and a slight hint of toasted almonds. The palate is soft and fleshy and loaded with bright citrus tones of sweet mandarin and Meyer lemon, white nectarine and rich tropical notes of guava, pineapple, and lichee - all complemented by subtle sweet oak.
- 2009 Domaine Leflaive, Meursault, Sous le Dos d'Ane, Premier Cru, 93 pts., Wine & Spirits; $160.00: For well over 250 years Domaine Leflaive has been passed down through members of the Leflaive family. In the last century the Domaine has seen its most important changes. This wine layers fossil-rich limestone with ginger and green apple brightness. The acidity is markedly high, giving a vibrant edge to all the toastiness and saline earthiness.
- 2009 Domaine Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet, Les Combettes, Premier Cru, 94 pts., Wine & Spirits; $225.00: Quite a mineral nose, a definite kick of chalkiness. Very direct and concentrated and firm. Wonderful undertow. Really bright fruit and confidence, showing much better at this stage than its lesser stablemates. The acidity seems better integrated. Relatively round and flattering.
- 2009 Domaine Leflaive, Batard-Montrachet, Grand Cru, 95 pts., Tanzer; $430.00: Bright, green-tinged yellow. Lime, powdered stone and mint on the nose, along with a buttery nuance. Dense, saline, sappy and intensely flavored; offers very good cut for a wine with such breadth and richness. The white peach and lime tea flavors are complemented by a hint of exotic fruits. Much more powerful and chewy than the Bienvenue (this is 13.5% alcohol), not to mention more structured. Finishes with a whiplash of mirabelle, honey and jasmine.
- 2009 Domaine Leflaive, Chevalier-Montrachet, Grand Cru, 98 pts., Wine & Spirits; $550.00: .....From the moment it's first poured, that extract has a sunny purity, an umami fragrance of the earth and a lemon blossom honey scent that feigns sweetness later revealed as savory richness in a finish that raises this wine into another realm. Chevalier's aristocratic soil comes into vivid focus over the course of several days through a scrim of silk. Prepare for your knees to melt and your heart to race as the wine reboots the balance of your senses. Or just enjoy it for what it is: A gracious grand cru, perfectly formed, with the detail of a pointillist painting that will come into focus over the next ten to fifteen years.

The vineyards of Chateau Bonnet were planted during the 16th century, by the Reynier family, wealthy merchants from Libourne. In a mere 30 years, the landscape around the house was transformed, as vines replaced forest on the surrounding slopes. Château Bonnet lies to the North of the Entre-Deux-Mers, on the clay-chalk slopes of the commune of Grézillac, overlooking the Dordogne valley some 10km south of Saint Emilion. The estate dates back to the 17th century; when André Lurton took over in 1956, it comprised 30 hectares of vineyard, which he immediately undertook to renovate and develop.

Normal retail price is $14.00 per bottle, but you only pay 1 penny upon spending $100 on any wine purchase.

This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled. Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised. As you are aware, all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm. This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar. |
