This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features!
Winter Whites

  • 2009 M. Chapoutier, Cotes du Rhone, Belleruche, Blanc; $14.00: Color: garnet red. Nose: aromas of red fruits (mainly morello cherries) and spices (liquorice, grey pepper). Mouth: this wine has a great structure with firm and silky tannins.
  • 2010 St. Urbans-Hof, Riesling, QbA, Mosel; $13.00: Elderflower, lilac, violet, and rose are the floral notes attributed to these wines along with smoky minerality.
  •  2010 Chateau Ste. Michelle, Riesling, Eroica, Dr. Loosen, Columbia Valley, 90 pts., Parker; $21.00  It's an intermingling of Old World and New World philosophy and technique to craft an extraordinary Riesling from Washington state grapes. Named for Beethoven's Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration.
  • 2010 St. Supery, Virtu, White Meritage, Napa Valley; Was $30.00, Now $25.00: This pale yellow wine is speared by streaks of brilliant youthful green. Bright aromas of lemon zest, guava and pink grapefruit combine with seductive nuances of toasted oak and sur lie maturation. The flavors follow with lemon zest, lychee, guava, grapefruit rind and a subtle creamy hint enhanced by the smoky barrel notes. This is a vibrant, textured wine with tremendous flavor. Enjoy!
  • 2010 La Crema, Chardonnay, Monterey; Was $20.00, Now $16.00: This wine opens with layered tones of tropical fruit and exotic floral notes mixed with lush butterscotch and spice. On the palate, stone fruit flavors abound, framed by a lovely minerality and subtle nuances of toast and caramel. The broad mouthfeel balances a bright acidity and lingering lemon zest on the finish.
  • 2010 Far Niente Winery, Chardonnay, Napa Valley; $57.00: The 2010 Far Niente Chardonnay offers aromas of Meyer lemon, toasted nuts and fig are supported by the underlying sweetness of honeysuckle. The entry is honeyed with ripe citrus, light melon and well-integrated nuttiness and a touch of mineral. A rich, full midpalate with balanced acidity draws out into a long finish.
  • 2009 Domaine William Fevre, Chablis, Champs Royaux; $23.75: This so-called basic Chablis is not so basic considering its multi-terroir and historical provenance (all of their grapes are culled from the original limits of Chablis prior to expansion in the 70s and from sites on par with their Premier Cru vines.) Purchased by Henriot in 1998, vinification has since been fulfilled by the team behind Bouchard. Steely, vibrant, delicious!
  • 2009 Domaine William Fevre, Chablis, Bougros, Cote Bouguerots, 90 pts., Burghound; $90.00: Light yellow color; apple, ripe lemon, honeysuckle nose; medium bodied, soft, ripe lemon, tart apple, mineral palate with near medium acidity; medium-plus finish.
  • 2009 Simonnet-Febvre, Chablis, Les Clos, Grand Cru; $69.00: Pale yellow color with a greenish tint. Aromas of pear, green apple, stone, satly ocean air and hints of oyster sauce. On the palate, slight butter quickly displaced by pear, apple, lemon zest and traces of lime. The acidity balanced it all out as this was crisp and refreshing yet not heavy. Excellent paired with oysters.

Pay one penny for one bottle of 2005 Eden Stuart, Korte Ranch Zinfandel, when you spend over $100.00 on any wine purchase. Normal price is $34.00 per bottle.

The Zinfandel at Korte Ranch was planted about 100 years ago during the administration of Theodore Roosevelt. It has lived through the Bolshevik revolution, the Red Scare and the dissolution of the USSR. These vines have coexisted with men on the moon and survived the invention of LSD, MTV, Velveeta and Cool Whip.

This 40 acre parcel just north of St. Helena is owned by Hal, Jack and Kathy Pagendarm. Hal's grandfather owned and operated the Korte Ranch Winery before Prohibition. Up on the hill are the crumbled remains of a stone cellar and house where the original Korte Winery was located. Periodic Elvis sightings are reported by the locals.

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees

From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr.  is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:

"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."

Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep  we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar.

This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled.  Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised.  As you are aware,  all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm.  This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar.
