Chamber Challenges SAMOHI Students
Over the past couple months, the
Santa Monica Chamber has played a heightened role in supporting hundreds of
students throughout the community. From the Employer & Student Expo on April
21 to the AP Challenge last week, local businesses, educators, and students have
come face to face in a variety of meaningful ways.
The AP Challenge, partnered with the
SMMUSD Education Foundation and Pugh + Scarpa Architects, called on Santa Monica High School students to create and market
socially conscious programs with specific and measurable goals in mind. These
projects were then presented to panels comprised of chamber leaders,
governmental representatives, school administrators, and parents. AP English
students designed a campaign to raise money for arts in education, while AP
Chemistry students presented sustainable development plans for Bergamot Transit Village. A competition between two AP
Chemistry classes, student presentations varied in implementation, but both
included such topics as pedestrian friendly streets, water reclamation and
reuse, natural resource conservation, renewable energy, and - of course - a
healthy and vibrant local economy.
