Greetings!

Headshot of Robert J. Zehr, MD
Ah, spring...

This month basketball fans are in their glory with March Madness. We have a different kind of "March madness" here in Southwest Florida known as "Spring Break!" If nothing else, seeing throngs of active, young people on the beach, in the mall or in local restaurants reminds many of us of our glory days - when we could spring out of bed in the morning, hop from one activity to another and fall into bed at the end of a long day, maybe bone-weary but not in pain.

Time does march on, we can't stay young forever. Everything takes on new meaning, and we are using a play on words in our advertisements for the June issue of Forever Young magazine. We'll show you one each month for the next 3 months. Hope you get a chuckle out of them, but more importantly, we hope that if you know someone who is suffering with joint pain, you'll tell them to give us a call.

Marching on,
Robert J. Zehr, M.D.

"When Can I...."

...is a Popular Question

This photo in my educational seminar always draws a laugh from those attendees who have already experienced hip or knee surgery. Your healing begins the moment you make your decision to have joint replacement surgery.

We will have you up and walking the same day of your surgery, in most cases. We will help you set a reasonable goal for the level of activity you can expect to achieve. A "return to normalcy" is just that - if you weren't a marathon runner before joint replacement surgery, don't expect to be one afterward! But how well you prepare your body for the process will help determine just how long your recovery takes.

  • Most patients will spend only 2 or 3 days in the hospital and will be discharged using a walker.
  • Within 2 weeks, most patients are using a cane.
  • And within 4-6 weeks most patients can return to full activity, such as golf, swimming, biking, and long distance walking.

You can ensure the success of your post-operative rehabititation by being realistic and yes - by doing what your therapist tells you to.

Time Marches On...

"I have known Dr. Zehr since his days at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland.

I knew that when it came time for me to have my knee replacement, there could be no one else with the skill and experience to do the surgery in Southwest Florida.

Although I am not as fast as I remember myself in my youth, I am fast enough--and have no pain in my knee.

I am grateful to Dr. Zehr and his team for an excellent result."
