Greetings!

Here we are at the beginning of "season" in Southwest Florida. Traditionally our winter residents begin flocking to our warmer climes just as the Thanksgiving holidays approach and we enjoy their company through Easter.

I'd like to take a moment to say "Thank you" to each of you who have become part of the Zehr Center family over the years. I'm grateful for your honest feedback, which helps us fine tune everything we do here. I have just been notified that I am a recipient of the 2011 Patients' Choice Award. It's truly an honor, as it is bestowed on only 5% of the nation's 720,000 physicians. You can read the details of the award on our website.

Ever grateful for you,
Robert J. Zehr, M.D.

Tradition is Good for Turkeys...

...But Bad for Hips

Historically, the vast majority of hip surgeons use a posterior lateral approach to enter the hip joint during a replacement operation. Over the recent years some of the surgeons have been able to reduce the surgical incision (typically 8-10" in length) and the detachment of surrounding musculature when performing a hip replacement surgery.

The technique referred to as minimally invasive hip surgery implies a smaller skin incision (typically 3-4") and requires only a fraction of the muscle detachment usually required by most surgeons to gain access to the hip joint. Although much more challenging for the surgeon, the minimally invasive hip replacement technique results in far less post-operative pain and a much quicker rehabilitation and return to full activity.

At The Zehr Center we pioneered the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement in Southwest Florida. You can learn more about this approach to hip surgery at our website.

Grateful Grandfather

Gary Lee and grandson in poolGary Lee is grateful for a pain-free life. After a total knee replacement, and later a total hip replacement, he's able to enjoy swimming and keeping up with his active grandson.
