Greetings!
I hope you stocked up on root and vegetable crops to store this fall and winter! Now that the farmers markets are closed for the season, the cravings will soon begin for those hungry for homegrown. Whet your appetite by keeping up-to-date with local food happenings (yes, even out-of-season) with Flavors. We'll be unveiling some new maps, guides, trails, and maybe even videos in the coming months you won't want to miss. And don't forget to share the good information and food with your friends by sharing our network newsletter on your Facebook and Twitter! Leopold Center Publishes New Growers Manual
The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture teamed up with GROWN Locally to help local food cooperatives improve their handling practices and meet food safety standards. But over here at Flavors we like it because it outlines harvesting and grading, cooling, cleaning, sanitation, and packaging directions for Iowa-grown food crops. Great information for both growers and consumers of local foods at farmers markets and grocery stores! Click here for the full press release and link to manual.

Join us for an evening learning about Flavors of Northwest Iowa with a focus on Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Hear Eden Valley Orchard & Farm owner, Tony Heisterkamp, talk about their farm and new CSA start-up while enjoying homemade apple crisp and hot apple cider straight from the orchard!

Link to ISU Research and New Projects
Follow ISU Extension & Outreach on Facebook for practical how-to education based on powerful university research. "USDA awards Iowa State grant to develop bio renewable plant containers" for ANYONE who currently grows in petroleum-based containers but would prefer a harmless, sustainable alternative! Harvesting and Storing Vegetables is a great publication for in-season harvest but also provides some tips on best prolonged winter storage conditions. ISU Receives Grant to Develop Cold-Hardy Grape Varieties to help midwest and Iowa start-up wineries to grow, make, and sell quality wines to local and regional markets.

Remind me again, why local food?
Need an additional reminder about the importance of buying locally grown sustainable foods? The USDA Economic Research Service recently updated their food price index forecast for the next two years. All food prices are projected to increase 3.5 to 4.5 percent. Sound like a good reason to participate in a local/regional food system that supports family farms that in turn support your local economy (not to mention appetite)? We think so! See the numbers for yourself. |
