Issue No. 5MAY 2011
E-Newsletter 5/15/2011

Greetings!

Please join us in coaxing Spring out of the closet!! At the Center, our fingers are crossed that soon we will be seeing warmth and sun on a more regular basis.

In May we are spotlighting the 9 partner groups that meet here regularly. Venture out of your norm this month and take in one of the 20 nights of programing and meetings taking place at the RC. Perhaps you'd like to join us for Karaoke on Wednesday night at 7pm; this is an all ages, drug & alcohol free event. Everyone can be a star!

In that spirit of partnership we are very excited to announce our newest ally the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation. We were very fortunate to be awarded a grant in their most recent funding cycle. Thank you for your support of the Rainbow Center!
Sneak out of the office, get out of the house, enjoy the sun wherever it presents.

In Gratitude-
Michelle

A Rare, and Exciting, Opportunity for Old Lesbians in Our Region

The Puget Sound and Portland chapters of OLOC, Old Lesbians Organizing for Change, are hosting  a Regional Gathering of Old Lesbians. The three-plus day conference will be held July 28-31, 2011, in Tacoma. A keynote presentation will be given by award-winning author and lesbian historian Lillian Faderman. The event will also feature a dance on Friday evening and a concert by French-Canadian singer-songwriter Lucie Blue Tremblay on Saturday evening. And, of course, there will be plenty of workshops and panels, as well as time to play.
The theme of this event will be Community · Visibility · Action.
If you'd like more information about participating in the 2011 Regional OLOC Gathering in Tacoma, July 28-31, 2011, you can visit the website www.psoloc.org or email  pnwgathering@psoloc.org. You can also call Gloria at 253-851-9864
If you're wondering what constitutes "old," the national organization defines it as 60 years of age and older. Locally, we aren't quite as rigid and acknowledge that some women reach "old" much sooner than others. If you define yourself as an old lesbian, you're welcome to be a part of Puget Sound OLOC.
OLOC is a national organization with members from all across the country, and even a few from abroad. They are held together not just by their common belief that the word old needs to be reclaimed but by their belief that ageism needs to be challenged. They are also held together by their desire to form a community of old lesbians who can share their interests and experience and support each other's efforts. On a national basis, OLOC women stay connected via ongoing exchanges of information and ideas in their quarterly newsletter,The Reporter, an active Yahoo list, emails, and, most importantly, through Gatherings.
Gatherings are either national or regional, designed and executed by, and for, old Lesbians. National Gatherings are held in even-numbered years and their location and programming varies. In the off years, OLOC (www.oloc.org) works to make sure a Regional Gathering occurs, drawing on the resources, energies and interests in a specific part of the country.
The term Gathering was used with intention: it aptly describes the spirit of OLOC conferences. Gatherings are opportunities for women with these common threads of being old and being lesbian, to come together and share ideas, listen, learn, network, see old friends, honor those whom we have lost, and form new friendships. Gatherings are energizing occasions where old lesbians celebrate who they are.
