Dear Friends,
The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind. Seemingly one long hot dry day. Somewhere in the beginning of that one long day our beautiful baby boy came into this world. Meghan and I were completely gone from the farm during the first week of July. What a surreal experience. I remember driving down rt. 5 & 10 on the way home from the hospital and looking at someone mowing their lawn. I was amazed that everything else in the world was business as usual because our world had completely stopped.
Being away from the farm in July is strange. Things move so fast this time of year and everything grows by leaps and bounds in the blink of an eye. Baby or no baby days in July have a way of blending together as the rhythm of repetitive harvesting, planting, and weeding beats on. Each new crop we harvest is a birth on its own and adds a palpable excitement for us and for you. As the summer plods on we expect new births each week as the onions, eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupe, etc. all come into their own.
In some small way we've felt like proud parents for a number of years now. The farm was our first child. It taught us how to be attentive, careful, nurturing, and committed. It taught us how to work tirelessly to meet its every need. We learned if we were able to fulfill its demands the rewards were immense. We have watched it grow up over the last 5 years and while nothing is ever truly done on the farm it seems to somehow need slightly less from us now than it did in the beginning (did I really just say that) and has made room for its new little brother. It has taught us so much and we are now ready to put its lessons into practice. I don't like to pick favorites when it comes to our 2 children but I will say the one that is cuter, easier to hold, and can pee all over you while cracking a smile is now a fixture at the top of my to do list for good. We're looking forward to watching him grow up on the farm and interact with all of you and your wonderful children while we continue on this delicious odyssey year after year. This week the stork brought us fresh onions. We'll keep you posted as to what is on it's way next!! A huge heartfelt thanks to our farm crew and a number of friends that put their all into keeping the farm going while we were gone!!! For Olivia, Jason, Max, Ben, Maryn, Sarah, and Kristen,
Your Farmers,
Rob and Meghan (and Cayden) |
