South Africa Truck Drivers on Strike

Over 20,000 truck drivers in South Africa have gone on strike and demand higher wages. The strike has halted the delivery of goods across the country, where 80 percent of all freight in South Africa is conducted by road.  Specific cities such as: Johannesburg, Durban, Wellington, Port Elizabeth & Cape Town are all affected.

They have rejected the employers' offer of an eight-percent wage increase, and talks have deadlocked with drivers seeking a 12-percent wage increase for 2013 and 2014. According to the Freight Employers' Association, talks with the drivers will resume on Wednesday. The strike could intensify should the drivers demands for higher wages not be met.
