The 2012 London Olympic Games and

How it will Affect Traffic

 

One month from today, the opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympics is set to commence. It's been estimated there will be over 100,000 people attending the opening ceremony on July 27th.  For those who have shipments planned or anticipated to/from the London area, there are major traffic and delivery restrictions that will begin in advance of the events.

  

Police are expected to block junctions & clear traffic ahead of the Torch and operate 'rolling road blocks' behind it. The districts affected and dates involved are: 
  • Saturday July 21st: Area - Waltham Forest: Postcode E17
  • Sunday July 22nd: Bexley: DA5, DA6, And DA7
  • Monday July 23rd: Wandsworth: SW11 & SW18 + parts of SW4/8/12/15/16/17/19
  • Tuesday July 24th: Ealing: W5
  • Wednesday July 25th: Haringey: N4, N8, And N15
  • Thursday July 26th: Westminster: WC codes
  • Friday July 27th Opening Ceremony: Stratford: E20 1, E20 2, E20 3

Although trucks will still be able to enter central London during the Olympic Games, there will be additional restricts. There will be lane closures and road blocks in put into place the night preceding events, but will not be left up between the races. Some of the routes have been published:

  • Marathon - Route includes The Mall, Victoria Embankment, the museum of London, and Trinity Square Gardens
    •    Women's Marathon: August 5th, 11:00am/2:00pm
    •    Men's Marathon: August  12th, 11:00am/1:30 pm
  • 20k and 50k Walk - Loop along Constitution Hill and The Mall
    •    Men's 20k: August 4th, 5:00pm/6:30pm
    •    Men's 50k: August 11th, 9:00am/1:20pm
    •    Women's 20k: August 11th, 5:00pm/6:45pm
  • Road Cycling and Time Trails - The races go through parts of south-west London, Middlesex, and Surrey. In particular, the A30 Egham bypass, Egham Hill, and the Runnymede roundabout linking Windsor via the A308, Egham, and Ascot to the M25 at junction 13 will be very difficult during this time.
    •    Men's Road Cycling Race: Saturday 28th July, 10:00am/4:15 pm
    •    Women's Road Cycling Face: Sunday 29th July, 12:00pm/4:15 pm
    •    Men's and Women's Cycling Time Trials: Wednesday August 1st, 12:30pm/4:05 pm
  • Beach Volleyball - Held at the Horse Guards Venue and the western side of Whitehall has been designated a pick-up/drop-off area for official Games vehicles only  24 hours a day during the period of the Games.
    •    Saturday July 28th to Thursday August 9th
