Business Planning Can Build Unity

A Massachusetts-based e-learning systems company uses the annual creation of the business plan to encourage teamwork instead of rivalry among departments.  Each department reviews other departments' sections of the plan to understand how their own needs interact with those of their fellow groups.

Finance imagines how its numbers will affect human resources' concerns with morale, technology considers the effects of its innovation on sales, and so on.  Sharing perspectives reminds everyone that no one works in a vacuum-except by mistake.

United Van Lines On 'Undercover Boss'

Undercover Boss

The Hilldrup Companies gathered over 250 employees, friends and family together on Sunday March 13th in excited anticipation for the viewing of the most recent Undercover Boss. We all watched together as our very own owner operator Jimmy Sanchez, and pack team Ronald Ruiz and Ruth Portillo were profiled.

Richard McClure, CEO of United Van Lines, America's #1 MoverŪ, was profiled on the hit CBS series "Undercover Boss" broadcast Sunday, March 13 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT). The series follows chief executives as they slip anonymously into the rank and file of their companies to examine the inner workings of their company. McClure, who has served as CEO of United since 2002, participated in various frontline jobs.

"Going undercover in my own company was an eye-opening experience," said McClure who has been with United Van Lines for 16 years. "Thanks to this experience, we have been able to glean years of insight and are better equipped to serve our customers and our dedicated team of agents. I discovered that our frontline workers are even more dedicated than I already knew. Their tremendous efforts help families across the country as they deal with one of life's most stressful events -- moving."

Operations - 2011

As we usher in the New Year, we look back on 2010 and see a year that brought modest growth in the midst of the continuing economic recovery. Our focus in 2011 will be on improved efficiency and delivery of the best possible service for Hilldrup customers.

We will be challenged by fuel costs which are continuing to rise. Efficient planning of our fleet is a must in order to maximize revenue opportunities for our Van Operators while continuing to provide on time loading and delivery services for our customers.

We have become more dependent than ever on technology to help us achieve these efficiencies. Our Van Operators are equipped with Blackberry smart phones which enable them to accept loading orders, update load statuses, and view special instructions electronically for each shipment. GPS units give them the most efficient routes to their origin and destination addresses. All of our vans are equipped with satellite tracking devices which give our planners real time locations of our assets, and your shipments, twenty four hours a day.

Continual training and safety are also vital to our success in 2011. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has implemented a new program called CSA 2010. This stands for Comprehensive Safety Analysis. It is designed to gather safety related data, not only on carriers, but also on individual drivers. The goal of CSA 2010 is to eliminate the high risk drivers and reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our nation's highways. One component of CSA 2010 is the Safety Measurement System (SMS). As data is collected on each driver the data is organized into BASICs, which stands for Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories. The seven BASICs are as follows:
  • Unsafe driving
  • Fatigued driving (which relates to Hours of Service rules)
  • Driver fitness
  • Controlled substances and alcohol
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Cargo related
  • Crash indicator

Each individual driver will have a BASICs score which contains 36 months of data. This score will have a major impact on their ability to continue driving a commercial vehicle.

We give our Van Operators access to online training through UniGroup University. They can take training and refresher courses on a wide variety of industry specific topics, such as safety, proper paperwork, communication, and fleet technology to name a few. This is a web based offering that can be accessed from our facilities while they are here between loads, or from their laptop computer while they are on the road.

So, as we navigate through 2011, our continued emphasis on safety, training, and technology will enable us to provide the exceptional service to our customers that they have come to expect and deserve. Hilldrup wishes you the best in this New Year and we thank you for the business that you will entrust to us throughout the year.

During the trip, an onsite visit was made to the regional office of a multinational client responsible for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in London, England.  This visit provided a better understanding of the mobility needs in this important part of the world and was an opportunity to measure how Hilldrup International is performing and staying ahead of future resource requirements needed in the region.

John Seal, Director, and Ted Langdon, Team Leader of Hilldrup International, recently traveled to Africa in an effort to strengthen our relationships with key business partners in the region.  Conducting business in Africa can be difficult, and in order to better understand the challenges involved, John and Ted went straight to the source, meeting with several multinational clients along the way.  They also visited the Africa Desk of AGS Frasers in Cape Town, South Africa, and then continued on to visit the AGS office in Nairobi, Kenya.
