The beginning of the New Year is a time for us to reflect on the past and begin looking to the coming year. The moving and storage industry continues to change and grow rapidly as businesses grow and expand, the housing industry improves and more people look to relocate. United Van Lines conducted a migration study looking at key areas around the country that are poised for growth based on criteria such as moving-in, moving-out or remaining balanced. The study looks at where customers moved from and where some of the most popular destinations have been over the past 12-month period. United has tracked shipment patterns every year on a state-by-state basis since 1977. This data is compiled from 146,837 interstate household moves completed by United in 2010.

The greater Washington DC metro area is the 'Top' move-in destination for two years in a row. Much of this growth is attributed to Washington DC being the nation's capital and the economy is driven by the activity of the Federal Government along with the government contractors that support its operations. In addition to Washington DC, the North Carolina and South Caroline areas experienced high in-bound growth. The Great Lakes region leads the move-out trends with Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania being the top areas customers were moving from. Household goods moves are projected to increase as the economy improves and business sectors plan for growth.

MidAmerica Airport Announcement
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) continues to implement and disseminate new regulations that are sure to inhibit the transportation of personal household effects by air worldwide. The TSA and their global counterparts are introducing purposely "unpredictable" mixes of security layers with varying degrees of cargo screening at cargo hubs, including explosive trace detection, advanced imaging technology, and canine teams to prevent future disruption of the global supply chain.
