Did You Know |  | Coaching is Important in the Workplace
Be a coach, not a spectator, for your staff... As a manager, are you a spectator or a coach? The distinction can be important. Spectators watch a team from the sidelines when the players are dressed and ready to play; coaches are down on the field with their players and work with them every day. To be a good coach, you've got to spend a lot of one-on-one time with your employees, giving praise and feedback. To be a spectator, you just have to shout "Good job!" or "What'd you do that for?" every once in a while. Welcome to the new digital version of our Hilldrup Companies "Momentum" newsletter. For more than 100 years, Hilldrup has prided itself on being an innovator and leader in the moving and storage industry. Now we are continuing that tradition by introducing our new digital newsletter. We feel this newsletter is another way for our customers to experience the commitment we have to providing excellence in customer service and outstanding quality.
This new digital newsletter format will let us deliver the most current information about the Hilldrup Companies in an exciting interactive way. Some of our new sections will include Notable News for National Accounts, Commercial Corner and Global Glimpse filled with examples of how we go above and beyond to make a difference for our customers. I will keep you informed on important industry events and updates throughout the year in an upcoming Industry Insights section.

Lump Sum Programs
As a way of containing relocation costs, many corporations have adopted a lump sum program for their relocating transferees. While lump sums are quite simple and do not require much administration, consideration needs to be given to how this benefit is treated. In every relocation, there are taxable and non-taxable events that have a financial impact on the corporation. For instance, household goods moves are considered non-taxable events when they are billed directly to the corporation. By unbundling this relocation component from the lump sum payment, a corporation does not need to gross-up or withhold taxes from the lump sum payment and may treat it as a business expense. As a business expense, no taxes are owed and no employer side of FICA is owed. Over time, this will result in significant savings.
At the Worldwide ERC conference held in May, 2010, a special session was conducted by May Caffi, Senior Director, Relocation Services of Marriott International. This informative session was designed to specifically address the lump sum vs. the full service move portion of a relocation.
