Holiday Traditions -- the Kitchen is the place to be.
Have you ever noticed that no matter how much effort you put into getting the whole house ready for the holidays, most people end up gathering in the kitchen? I'm not sure if it is the smell of fresh cookies, the anticipation of a holiday feast or simply wanting to be in the middle of the action, but the kitchen seems to be the heart of the house. Some of Louisville Handyman's customers are celebrating holiday traditions in their new kitchens this year. The photos shown are from a project where we completely remodeled the kitchen, including redesigning the space to be more open and replacing all of the cabinetry. The new design eliminated an "out of date" peninsula and we moved the location of the refrigerator to create a more appealing space. The transformation was made complete with new quartz counters tops, GE appliances and an upgraded lighting plan to complement the new layout. Knowing how you will use the space is critical to the right kitchen design. The design for this project not only took into account entertaining for the holidays, but also included planning for time watching ball games at the kitchen table. One of this customer's favorite features was the new flat panel TV which was built into the cabinetry for just that purpose. I hope each of you enjoys many blessings during this holiday season and we look forward to serving you in 2011. Joe French President Louisville Handyman, Inc. |
Steps to an Organized Kitchen
Even with a sizeable kitchen, you may feel as if you don't have enough space to store everything and you can't find what you want when you need it. To be honest, though, most of our kitchens are cluttered up with a variety of gadgets we never use. The first step in organizing your kitchen is to take account of the various items you have stored there and eliminate those that are unnecessary. If a small appliance is in good condition, but you haven't used it for years -- donate it. Don't continue to keep it stored in the back corner of a cabinet.
After reducing the number of items in your kitchen, its time to think about your storage options. It's interesting to note that recent research by Merillat, a cabinetry manufacturer, revealed that 84 percent of consumers consider storage features to be the most important factor in their cabinetry decision process. This consideration came in second only to price. Yet many of these same people were unaware of the wide range of interior cabinetry storage solutions available today -- everything from a pull-out spice organizer to a drawer organizer for cooking utensils. The photos here illustrate just a few examples.
A third step is to think about how the kitchen as a whole is organized. Because nowadays kitchens are used by multiple members of a family, and for activities as varied as children doing their homework and homeowners entertaining their friends, designers often suggest the kitchen be divided into specialized areas called "zones".
Planning separate zones -- such as prep, cook, bake, clean-up, storage, homework, and entertaining zones -- makes it easier for more than one family member to work in your kitchen at the same time and not bump elbows. You also want to minimize the number of steps each person must take around the kitchen to get the job done. The idea is that each zone contains the equipment necessary for the task at hand to be performed. If you only have space for one refrigerator, it should be placed in proximity to both the prep and cook zones. Adding a secondary sink, or perhaps an appliance such as a refrigerator or dishwasher drawer, can make it possible for the zones to be utilized independently. Organizing your kitchen in zones specifically designed to meet the needs of your family and its lifestyle can go a long way in maintaining the joy and peace that should characterize this season.
