The Jasmine Project of Miami-Dade

The newest Federal Healthy Start program to launch, the Jasmine Project, is a collaboration between University of Miami Millers School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade. Awarded a five year grant of $750,000 each year, the Jasmine Project will aim to decrease racial disparities in North Miami, Miami Gardens, and Opa-locka. Previously, the black infant mortality rate in these communities reached as high as 12.9 deaths per 1,000 live births compared to that of white infants at 5.8 deaths per 1,000 live births.

The Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade and the University of Miami Millers School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics have long been working to create a streamlined program that not only p revented infant mortality through education and health care, but also monitored and conducted relevant research in the field of maternal and child health. In order to merge the two existing programs and create the Jasmine project, all involved needed a  streamlined process that provided program and case management tools that were service delivery oriented but that also focused on extensive, on-demand reports lists and analysis needed for research studies. Their solution: the Well Family System.

The Well Family System is able to enhance the ability for all levels of involvement,  from administrator to researcher to case manager, and all them to see ALL clients, services, and data. Ultimately this creates a user- friendly one-stop-shop for maternal and child health research and review. Well Family System is not like most reporting solutions used in the MCH industry that tend to rely on a standard, linear format of reporting, but is an innovative and thoughtful solution that is able to connect and analyze multiple levels of data input.

The programs that have begun in the past several years have all had a common goal set forth by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and that goal is innovation. We have had the opportunity to be involved in several of the most recent Federal Healthy Start Programs and that is because we share the common goal of HRSA: innovations in service delivery within the maternal and child health industry. All of our management systems are built with the end client in mind - the women and children across all communities.

We at Go Beyond MCH celebrate the new Jasmine Program and look forward to continue enhancing the program's ability to make a difference not just in the Miami-Dade area, but to continue to support them as they feed data and fuel research in collaboration with the University of Miami.
