MARCH: COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum. It is estimated that in 2012, approximately150,000 people - men and women - will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and an estimated 50,000 will die of the disease.

With proper screening, this cancer can be prevented by removing polyps (grape-like growths on the wall of the intestine) before they become cancerous.

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include:

  • Being age 50 and older
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight or obese, especially those who carry fat around their waists
  • Lacking physical activity
  • Drinking alcohol in excess, especially men
  • Eating a lot of red meat (such as beef, pork or lamb) or processed meat (such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs or cold cuts)
  • A personal or family history of colorectal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn's Disease
  • A personal or family history of colorectal, ovarian, endometrial, breast or other cancers of the GI tract or the female reproductive system

The most common symptom of colon cancer is having no symptom at all, which is why regular screening is critical.

If you have one or more risk factors for colorectal cancer, it is recommended that you speak with your physician about scheduling a screening.
