KNOW YOUR SKIN
Self skin examMore than two million people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Left untreated skin cancer may progress to cause considerable damage, disfigurement or even death. As a matter of fact, more than 10,000 people die in this country annually from skin cancer.

The key to treating skin cancer is early detection. As such, you should examine your skin frequently to look for changes. Information on how to conduct a self skin exam is available from the American Academy of Dermatology.

If you notice any unusual spots on your skin, you should bring them to the attention of your physician.

MAY: ARTHRITIS AWARENESS MONTH

Arthritis is a term used to describe more than 100 different conditions that affect joints as well as other parts of the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems, and it is the nation's most common cause of disability.

According to Foxhall Internists' Dr. Assil Saleh, a board certified rheumatologist and internal medicine specialist, the key to living better with arthritis is understanding your condition.

"Anyone experiencing prolonged joint pain or discomfort should seek assistance from their physician," says Dr. Saleh. "By properly identifying the exact cause of the problem, there is a greater likelihood of developing an appropriate treatment plan."

More information about arthritis is available from the Arthritis Foundation.
