| SPRING ALLERGY SEASON IS HERE | |
For the millions of Americans with seasonal allergies, the entire spring season can mean a whole lot of sneezing, watery eyes and runny noses.
Several medications are now available over the counter and by prescription to help deal with different types of allergens such as dust, mold and pollen. However, understanding what may be causing your allergies and working with your physician is the best way to devise a solid management plan.
Other tips to help control allergy symptoms include:
- Stay indoors when pollen counts are high-usually during midday
- Keep windows closed
- Change your clothes after being outside
- Shower before bed to keep the bed from being contaminated
- Change bed sheets weekly
- Vacuum frequently
If you have additional questions about seasonal allergies, you should speak to your physician or contact Foxhall Internists at (202) 362-4467. |
| APRIL: IBS AWARENESS MONTH | |
|
If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you are not alone - IBS is common with worldwide prevalence estimated at 9% to 23%. Yet many people remain undiagnosed and unaware that their symptoms indicate a medically recognized disorder.
The typical signs and symptoms of IBS are...
- pain or discomfort in the belly (abdomen),
- that happens several days or more per month over at least the last 3 months, and
- is related to changes in the way your bowel moves, meaning the pain/discomfort...
- gets better after a bowel movement, and/or
- happens when bowel movements become more often or less often, and/or
- when stools are getting harder or softer
Everyone has a bout of abdominal pain and diarrhea or constipation now and then. That's not unusual. It is unusual when the symptoms persist or keep coming back. And while IBS is a complex condition, there are ways to manage it. The first step is to speak with your physician.
More information about irritable bowel syndrome is available from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. |
