KIDS CORNER

The boys are growing up so fast!!!  Alex discovered while we were in Poland that he has his first loose tooth.  He is SO excited!  He asks me to wiggle it everyday and wants to know each time if it is more loose than the last!

Jonah is really enjoying Preschool and will be starting private Ukrainian lessons after the first of the year.  Jonah's favorite part of our vacation was the free breakfast at our hotel.

All of the boys are best friends (most of the time) and are quick to console each other when hurt or upset.  It is fun to watch them grow up into little men!

Ministry News....
When we partnered with Kontaktmission we knew that our first year of service in Ukraine would be dedicated to learning the language and culture and that we would not be doing any actual ministry.  But in July the Lord provided us with an amazing opportunity to reach out to the people of Kremenchuk through English classes.  Our leaders with Kontaktmission gav The Beginner/Intermediate English Club e us the go ahead and in September we started our English Club.  The beginners
/intermediates meet on Wed. nights and the advanced class meets on Thurs. nights.  The classes have been going really well and we have been able not only to teach our students English, but we have been able to share the Gospel with them every week!  Many of our students have told us how much they enjoy the classes and how they feel we are changing their lives in more ways than just teaching them English.  One student wrote an e-mail to us that said, "Just think how you are changing our life here, your way to Ukraine was worth this."  Reading that one e-mail did make all of our struggles and difficulties with moving and learning a new culture and language worth it.  What a privilege it is to be a part of what God is doing in the hearts and minds of the people of Ukraine!

A Time to Give Thanks...
As Christians we should be giving thanks all the time.  But there is still a special time of year when we really sit down and look over the last year of our lives and count and give thanks for the tremendous ways that God has blessed our lives.

As we look back on our last year we stand in awe of what God has done in our lives.  We have so many things to be thankful for!  First and foremost, we are thankful for an amazing, wonderful and gracious God who sent his Son to die for our sins.  We are thankful for wonderful parents who love and support us.  We are thankful for all of our friends and families.  We are thankful for our church families and the wonderful ways that they have supported us. We are thankful for an amazing sending organization, Kontaktmission. We are thankful for a very smooth move and transition to Kremenchuk.  We are thankful for the friends that we have made here.  We are thankful for our new church family here in Kremenchuk.  We are thankful that we have managed to stay pretty healthy this year.  We are thankful for our wonderful apartment.  We are thankful that we can go grocery shopping, ride the bus and order water without a translator!  We are thankful that Alex and Jonah are doing so well in school and with learning the languages.  We are thankful that we have gotten to spend some time with our wonderful family from BCC.  We are thankful that Jon's parents were able to come and visit us.  We are thankful that God has blessed our English/Evangelism ministry.  We are thankful that we are beginning to feel at home in Kremenchuk.  And if you are reading this, we are thankful for YOU!!!!

A "Traditional American Thanksgiving" in Kremenchuk!!!

Thanksgiving is the first MAJOR holiday that we have spent away from our family and friends and we were unsure of how we were going to spend the special day.  Thankfully, there are some other American missionaries in our city so we were all able to get together to celebrate Thanksgiving together.  We gathered together at Jon and Andrea's house at
Thanksgiving Dinner at the Hoglunds

2:00pm and the feast began.  Andrea was able to find a whole turkey, something you can't usually find here, and there were mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, green bean casserole, a vegetable tray, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry salad, pumpkin pie and an apple Bavarian cream pie.  And as we gathered around the table to give thanks for the bounty of food, for just a minute we were able to forget that we were half a world away from our families and friends.  After we were all thoroughly stuffed we sang some Christian Hymns about giving thanks and then we all sat back down around the table and shared stories about our lives here in Kremenchuk.  It was a great time filled with good friends, good food and a lot of laughs.  We are so thankful for Jon and Andrea, Greg, Jayne and Steve who made our Thanksgiving away from home seem not that far away at all.
The Value of People....
The other day as I was walking with Jonah and Isaac to go pick up Alex I saw something that I just can't get out of my mind.  We were walking down a path and a woman who was obviously drunk was muttering something and walked past the man who was walking in front of her.  I have no idea whether they were together or not, but I could not believe what happened next.  Something told me to turn around and when I did, I saw the man grab the woman by the hood of her coat, slam her up against the fence and start pounding her in the head with his fist.  I immediately yelled out for him to stop astounded that one person could treat another this way at all, let alone in public.  He did stop and walked away but it left my heart hurting not only for this woman and all of the other alcoholics here, but also for the people who treat them as if they are less than human because of their alcoholism.  I have seen people treat the stray dogs wandering around the city better than their fellow human brothers and it breaks my heart.  Would you please join me in praying for the Ukrainians to see each other as God sees them and to treat each other with love regardless of who they are?  And please pray also that Jon and I would continue to act out with boldness in these situations and to show the love, hope and forgiveness available through Jesus Christ.

Our Trip to Poland....
On Dec. 5th Jon and I and the boys boarded a plane headed to Poland.  Ukrainian law states that in order to get our visas renewed we had to leave the country so Jon and I packed up the kids and headed out on what we realized was our first family vacation.  We had a GREAT time!!!!  We went to Krakow, Poland where we got to see castles (one was at the end of our street!), statues, beautiful basilicas, and the amazing Christmas market in the main square.  We also took the boys to the mall to see Santa, had a snow ball fight in the park and ate some delicious food.  My favorite part was the salt mine.  We went down 130 meters, 400 steps, into this incredible salt mine where all of the statues, chapels and even the chandeliers were made of salt.  Of course the boys' favorite part was the train tracks they found in the mine!  We are so thankful for the 4 days that we had to do nothing except enjoy our family!  We got our visas renewed the first day and were able to return to Ukraine for another year!  Praise the Lord!
