Waves of Change

DCADV's Annual Advocates' Retreat

The Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence held its 2011 Annual Advocates Retreat on June 27th and 28th at the Atlantic Sands Hotel and Conference Center in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  This year the theme was Waves of Change as we focused on topics that not only empowered the victims and survivors we work with, but also ourselves.  A variety of topics were covered, including law enforcement response to domestic violence, financial literacy, confidentiality, technology safety, healing and trauma, safety and justice, best practices in the field, and engaging men and boys.

We were joined by over 120 DV advocates from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.  Our keynote addresses were given by Emily McGinnis of the REAP Training Institute and Dr. Stephanie Covington from the Institute for Relational Development and the Center for Gender and Justice.  We were also joined by Dr. Vicky Kelly of the Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health, Erica Olsen from the National Network to End Domestic Violence Safety Net Project, David Thomas of Johns Hopkins University, and David Sargent of the Maryland Network to End Domestic Violence.

Many thanks go out to the support of the DCADV staff, our community partners, our many sponsors, and most of all the many DV advocates that joined us this year.

Blue Rocks

BlackRock

BlackRockLocal investment management firm BlackRock has awarded $15,000 to the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence to support their economic justice program, which will also support financial literacy workshops for victims and survivors of domestic violence in People's Place shelters.

Financial abuse occurs in 98 percent of abusive relationships and is the reason 7 out of 8 victims return to abusive relationships1.  Financial abuse can include denying a partner access to funds, having to account for every dollar spent, putting all bills in the victim's name to jeopardize their credit, demanding a partner's paycheck, or interfering with work or not letting a partner work. Without freedom to acquire, use, and maintain economic resources, victims are unable to be self-sufficient. Economic abuse often forces victims to choose between staying in an abusive relationship or face poverty and/or homelessness. Read more...
