Coming to a theater near you!

Members of DCADV's newly formed Delaware MEN: Men's Education Network recently completed filming and production of a 60 second video public service announcement (PSA) that will begin airing in the Dover Carmike Cinema in the Dover Mall throughout the month of June.  Click here to view the PSA

The PSA is targeted at educating and engaging men to work with us to end domestic violence. The PSA also invites new men to join the group (which just began meeting in April 2011) with the goal of promoting healthy relationships, and, ultimately, ending domestic violence.

Delaware MEN will create and implement a plan to engage men from throughout The First State to help reach this goal. Read more about the group at www.DelawareMEN.org. Men interested in being part of Delaware MEN should contact DCADV at 302-658-2958 or training@dcadv.org

We are grateful for funding for the cinema airtime and other Delaware MEN dissemination materials provided by the Delaware Fatherhood/Family Coalition and Delaware Promoting Safe & Stable Families Program/PBHS.

The Address Confidentiality Bill

On Thursday, May 19th Governor Jack Markell signed Senate Bill 28, also known as the Address Confidentiality bill.  SB 28 is An Act to Amend Titles 11 & 15 of the Delaware Code Relating to Address Confidentiality for Certain Persons.  This Act will protect the safety of certain victims of violent crime by creating Delaware's Address Confidentiality Program, which will be administered by the Delaware Department of Justice.  The Program will permit victims of crime of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault, as well as persons participating in Delaware's Witness Protection Program, to keep their actual address confidential by applying to the Department of Justice for a substitute address to which all mail will be delivered.

Having a protected address gives invaluable protection to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, especially because many public records are accessible through a simple internet search. This legislation provides survivors with a necessary tool to keep their address secret from those who have targeted them and to help them reclaim their privacy and rebuild their lives. This law will take effect on October 3rd, 2011.  To view the bill, click here.

Cell Phone Collections Benefit DCADV

As you may know, the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence collects used cell phones on an ongoing basis.  The phones collected raise unrestricted funds for activities like advocacy and public education.  DCADV ships the donated phones and batteries to Shelter Alliance a program of GRC Wireless Recycling (www.grcrecycling.com), a company dedicated exclusively to socially responsible cell phone recycling.  They recycle the phones and pay the organizations a certain dollar amount for each phone, based on the make, model, etc.

At times other groups conduct cell phone collection and designate DCADV as the recipient of either the phones or the funds.  A few of the most recent collections were held this spring, including one by SSD Technology Partners and another by a class at the University of Delaware. Read more...

DCADV Volunteer Wins Award!

DCADV has had many great volunteers and interns through the years who dedicate a lot of time and effort to support our projects and daily operations.  This past year was no exception, with committed volunteers Cindy McDaniels, Lucy Fox, Amani Clotter, Nicole Falkowski, and Marilyn DiToro and interns Kiki Evinger and Victoria Steele.

Hena Kumar, a University of Delaware graduate as of last weekend, has served as both a dedicated volunteer for the past year and as an intern for one semester.  As a volunteer, Hena has been involved with various communication and special event efforts, and she has always been willing to jump in and help in any capacity needed, and always with a sweet smile.   She is in the process of completing an extensive and detailed inventory list of the items in our Resource Library that will be a useful resource for DCADV staff, advocates, and community members.  As an intern, Hena made a significant contribution to DCADV's Domestic Violence, Mental Health and Trauma project aimed at promoting a collaborative approach among advocates and clinicians to using a trauma focused approach with survivors of domestic violence.

On Thursday, May 12th Hena was presented with the Nikki Woolf Volunteer of the Year Award from the City of Newark and the University of Delaware for her service here at DCADV!

Congratulations on a well deserved honor, Hena, and thanks to all of our committed volunteers and interns for supporting our mission to end domestic violence!
