The Vagina Monologues -

V-Day 2011 at the University of Delaware Benefitting Abriendo Puertas, a bi-lingual battered women's shelter program of People's Place II

The award-winning play is based on V-Day Founder/playwright Eve Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women's sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

New Survey Presents Snapshot of Domestic Violence Services in Delaware

A new survey conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence reveals telling information about domestic violence services in the United States and in Delaware. View the Delaware Summary.

 

Each year, the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) conducts a 24-hour nationwide census of the services provided by local domestic violence programs in each state. This year, nationwide, the census found that 3 women were murdered by their intimate partners, 36 babies were born to mothers living in domestic violence shelters, and 3 men committed suicide - 1 after murdering his wife, another after a failed attempt to kill his girlfriend, and the third after holding his partner hostage and a standoff with the police. Join us at The Baby Grand on Friday, March 25th for performances by Pieces of a Dream, Inc.  The DCADV Women of Color Task Force is co-sponsoring the event, which features 2 special dance performances relating to domestic violence. DCADV staff and Task Force members will provide information to guests at resource tables at the theater.

Meet DCADV's New Staff!

Help us welcome the newest members of our team:

 

Lisa Becker, Project Coordinator, Disabilities Grant 

Lisa will be coordinating the Coalition's Violence Against Women's Disability Grant.  This three-year grant is a collaboration between the Coalition, the Center for Disabilities Studies at the University of Delaware and NAMI Delaware focusing  on violence against, and abuse of, women with cognitive / developmental disabilities or mental health conditions in Delaware.  Previously employed at the Center for Disabilities Studies, Lisa has a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Delaware and a Master's in Library Science from Florida State University. 

 

Tya Pope, Training and Prevention Specialist

Tya's position focuses on conducting and coordinating trainings and presentations, supporting organizations that focus on preventative work in the field of DV, and providing support for the Domestic Violence Specialist Certification Program.  She is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a BA in Women's Studies and Political Science with a concentration in Public Law.  While at the university, she was actively involved in planning and coordinating programs and education sessions around issues of sexual assault, gender identity, and equity for women and the LGBTQ communities.  She is currently pursuing her Master's in Public Administration at the University of Delaware where she is focusing on Organizational Leadership and Civic Engagement.  Tya was recently honored through the Walnut Street YMCA's Black Achievers Program where she serves as a youth mentor.

GTEAP Predominant Aggressor Training DVDs Still Available!

The Grants to Encourage Arrests Project (GTEAP) is a collaborative effort between DCADV, People's Place II and the Delaware City, Elsmere and New Castle City Police Departments. An integral part of this grant is a 3.5 hour training video featuring Professor Dave Thomas, a full-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins University. Read more...

Free On-Line Violence Prevention Course offered by the CDC

Each year, more than 53,000 people lose their lives to violence. In addition to the tremendous physical and emotional toll, violence has substantial medical and lost productivity costs. In 2000, these totaled more than $70 billion in the United States. The figure grows when we add criminal justice system costs, social services, and other expenses.

As Dr. Rodney Hammond, Director of CDC's Division of Violence Prevention, says, "Violence isn't something that just happens that you can't do anything about. It can be prevented."   Read more...

International Women's Day and Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month, and this year's March 8th was the
100th International Women's Day. DCADV's Executive Director was honored to attend a special reception hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House

The day was commemorated in many ways, including an insert in USA Today focusing on the state of women in the world, with a special section about the vital importance of investing in services for survivors of domestic violence.
