"Packs for Pride" Benefit Children Impacted By Domestic Violence

packsThe Coalition and Member Organizations benefited from the generous Verizon Wireless "Packs for Pride" program in December. More than 80 backpacks filled with toys, games, books, and necessities such as clothing and toiletries were distributed to children in local shelters serving victims of domestic violence. The "Packs for Pride" program was started in 2001and has been instituted as an additional component to Verizon Wireless' annual HopeLine activities. Verizon Wireless' Philadelphia Region has donated nearly 1,200 stuffed backpacks to local shelters. Additionally, Verizon Wireless employees have volunteered more than 250 hours of time to organize items, stuff backpacks and deliver the Packs for Pride to the recipient domestic violence shelters. Employees have also contributed a total of $1,000 towards the purchase of items for the Packs for Pride initiative. The packs are distributed at Christmas, on birthdays or at other times during the year when a point of light is needed.

Thanks to Verizon Wireless for this generous donation!

Honor Society students held successful Cell Phone Drive for DCADV

Wilm Univ

DCADV Staff members Stephanie Ferrell and Sara Mersch receiving the donated cell phones from Wilmington University Staff.

Members of Wilmington University's Delaware BETA Chapter of the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society held a statewide cell phone drive to benefit DCADV during October 2010, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. They collected more than 150 phones and presented them to DCADV at their November 12th Induction Ceremony. With more than 100 new members and 200 of their families and friends in attendance at the event on Wilmington University's New Castle campus, DCADV had the opportunity to share information about our mission and thank the students for their hard work.

The students organized and promoted the cell phone drive at all of their campuses throughout Delaware, and even into New Jersey. DCADV partners with Shelter Alliance, which recycles the phones and raises unrestricted funds for DCADV.

Other groups, including workplaces, churches, and student groups interested in holding a cell phone drive to benefit DCADV can register on our special Shelter Alliance DCADV web page or contact Stephanie at 302.658.2958 for details. It's easier than you might think, and it makes a big difference for us!

EITC Can Benefit DV Survivors!

During the months of January and February, the National Network to End Domestic Violence's Economic Justice Team is urging all coalitions and economic justice advocates to remind local programs about the benefits of filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). EITC is a tax credit for people who work for low wages and can mean more money in the pocket of those who qualify. This tax credit reduces the amount of tax owed or gives a tax refund. Tax credit maximums can range from $457 to just over $5,000.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) indicates that 3.5 - 7 million households entitled to EITC do not claim this benefit. To learn more about EITC eligibility requirements visit the IRS website at, www.irs.gov.  The website offers online tools and fact sheets that can help you answer specific questions regarding EITC. Don't let families miss the opportunity to access the tax credit and/or refund owed to them!

Meet the Funder

We'd like to publicly recognize the generous contribution of our newest DCADV supporter:

BOA Logo awarded DCADV with a grant for $25,000 for general operating support. These funds are being used to build our organizational capacity to meet the increasing needs for DV services, support, advocacy, and public awareness within our state. Bank of America's philanthropic focus is on supporting the needs of their local communities. We're honored to have received Bank of America's support for the important work we, and all of you, are doing right here in Delaware. Thank you Bank of America!

Thank you Fulton Bank!

Many thanks to Lisa Jones and Fulton Bank for choosing DCADV as their charity for the 24th Annual Grotto Pizza's Parade of Trees. The Parade of Trees is a holiday program in which local businesses pay an entry fee to display a decorated tree in a Grotto Pizza Restaurant.  Grotto customers then make donations to the charity with the best decorated tree. Thanks to Fulton Bank for supporting DCADV and our mission to end domestic violence!
