Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

Greetings!

The first day of autumn officially begins on September 23 at 9:04 am and marks the first day of fall.  This is the Autumn Solstice.  "Solstice" literally means "sun stands still."  The length of night and day across the world is nearly equal.

The season between summer and winter is a time when the homeless are anticipating the coming of winter, colder temperatures, what to do, where to go, how to survive.

Those with pets know all too well there are few shelters willing to accept them with their pets.   As the weather cools it's a reminder of things to come.

Many homeless are unable to make use of necessary resources to gain employment or move out of a state of homelessness because there are no accommodations for them with their pets.  Commitment to their pets often overrides seeking shelter or help for themselves.

We have a Grant Project for shelters willing to allow the homeless refuge with their pets.  We encourage shelters to prepare early this year for the coming cold winter days and nights.

Do you know of a shelter willing to allow the homeless to stay with their pets?  Maybe the question should be, are you willing to contact a shelter to encourage them to consider this?  Would you tell them about the Pets of the Homeless Crate Project

To keep the Crate Project going, we are constantly in need of donations.  Please help us spread the word.

DONORS of the Month

With much appreciation, Pets of the Homeless wishes to gratefully acknowledge the top donors for the month of August.

  • Jill Parnham of Action, CA
  • Barry Ebling of Hemet, CA
  • Marcus Private Foundation for the Protection of Cats and Pets of Palm Desert, CA
  • Pink Couture Cutting Lounge with Tickled Pink Beauty Bar of South William Lake BC Canada

The generosity of donors make it possible to expand the outreach of Pets of the Homeless.

Volunteer veterinarians go where the homeless congregate to provide clinics for their pets.  Our grant program assists to off-set the costs for veterinarians who selflessly provide these clinics.  Thanks to donors, these grants are possible.

At the clinics, veterinarians give pets of the homeless wellness evaluations, vaccinations, tick/flea treatment and more.  Until these clinics, many of the animals had never been seen by a vet

Homeless Man

Needed Emergency

Care for his Dogs

Ted lost his job so he and his two lab mixes, Wyatt (2) and Morgan (4), had to move and now live in a trailer in the desert without hookups.  The trailer was near a chicken coop which was not kept clean.

Both dogs ate chicken feces and became very ill with bloody diarrhea and bloody vomiting.  Pets of the Homeless was contacted for help.  We set up an emergency appointment at a nearby clinic and paid most of the veterinary bill.

The treatment included exam, fluids and Amoxicillin.  Both dogs are on the road to recovery.

The best part of this story is the veterinary technician offered Ted, Wyatt and Morgan a place to live in exchange caretaking the dogs at her own rescue.  She currently cares for 17 dogs and 3 cats.

Pets of the Homeless is grateful to have been able to help Wyatt and Morgan.  Ted is appreciative and his pets, we're certain, are happy to be feeling well again.

Pets of the Homeless is always in need of donations with our outreach.  Would you help?  Please visit Pets of the Homeless to find out how.  We appreciate our volunteers and donors more than words can say.

Pets of the Homeless

Recipient Wants to Help

After volunteering for the Poverty and Homeless Coalition of Irving, TX, Julie Grant received a referral that touched her heart more than once. Also a volunteer for Pets of the Homeless, Julie felt compelled to share this story.

Fred was indeed a gentleman and his companion a beautiful, brindle pit bull mix.  He had been referred so he could get some dog food.

Fred, a veteran and college educated, had a work history where he had earned high incomes until a medical condition, neuropathy, made it impossible to work at a conventional job.  He has good day and bad days.

When Julie met with him, Fred was not having a good day and the weakness in his limbs was apparent.  Not wanting to tax his energy, Julie tried not to stay too long but he wanted to talk.

Fred talked about his background and included that he is currently in an experimental medical program which he feels is helping.  Still he cannot hold down a job.  "The government," he said, "has helped with a few dollars, but I want to earn my own way."

Julie left Fred with some dog food and returned home with a prayer in her heart.

The next day he called to tell her that his landlord had given him an opportunity to earn some money.  She had him clean a vacant apartment because the hired person had not shown up.  The landlord was so pleased with the great job Fred did that she hired him on the spot for the part-time job.  Fred was excited to be able to earn a good wage.

He told Julie, "I would like to help you with your volunteer work in some way.  If you need someone to ride with you to make deliveries, I would like to do that."

Julie was shocked a recipient would consider helping.  There have been times when she was hesitant to deliver to a home by herself so Fred's offer was very much appreciated.

People touching other's lives "pays it forward" and the giving and compassion continue.  Pets of the Homeless is  honored to be involved with each of our generous volunteers to help in any way we can.
