Providing Pet Food & Veterinary Care
                                                                 By K. Bole
Issue 33          ~~          April 2011

Greetings!

Pets of the Homeless has determined that an average dog weighing 35-40 pounds requires 4 cups of dry pet food a day.

Minimal Veterinary Care should include:

  • Annual exam with ear inspection
  • Flea/tick prevention
  • Heartworm test & medication
  • Worm check
  • Blood test when idicated plus any needed antibiotics, etc.
  • Rabies & DHPP vaccine every 3 years
  • Teeth cleaned every 5 years

The pet food and veterinary care amounts to $7.79 a day.  The cost for a year $2,843.  Owning a dog today can be expensive.

The love and loyalty our pets give is priceless.  The homeless are too often unable to provide the bare necessities for themselves yet will not give up a beloved pet.  The needs of these animals do not diminish because of poverty or life circumstances in which they live.  If anything, the needs magnify.

AnimalSave & Hospitality House

Saves Animals

AnimalSave has a vision to transform the lives of cats and dogs in Nevada County, CA.  This non-profit began in earnest in 1998 with a focus to prevent overpopulation, suffering and abandonment of pets and to end the needless killing of companion animals.

In March 2008 a Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic was initiated.  Over 4,500 dogs and cats have been spayed or neutered since that time.

Carolyn Niehaus, AnimalSave's Executive Director, explained, "This effort has significantly reduced the number of unwanted animals in the community.  If half of the animals altered were female with the potential for two litters per year of at least five offspring, the efforts of AnimalSave prevented the unwanted birth of approximately 22,000 cats and dogs."

2008 was an inspiring year for AnimalSave as they also took on the challenge of funding and operating a Low-Income Pet Food Distribution Program.  Intending to help people keep their pets by providing supplemental food, they have distributed over 60,000 pounds of pet food for many families undergoing financial difficulties.

AnimalSave has coordinated efforts with Hospitality House, a non-profit homeless shelter in Nevada County.  Together these organizations have provided the homeless free vaccinations for their pets and have expanded services for the homeless to have access to free or low-cost veterinary services, including a spay/neuter clinic for their companion animals.

The guests of Hospitality House Shelter are a big part of the community and give back  with a town clean-up effort several times a year.

Pets of the Homeless  Founder/Executive Director,

Genevieve Frederick said, "An organization like AnimalSave not only has a positive impact in the lives of animals, but also for the community.  It is with great pleasure we award AnimalSave with a grant in the amount of $800 to help with the cost to spay and neuter pets of the homeless."

Volunteers provide assistance to transport animals to the mobile clinic if necessary.  A local veterinarian provides low-cost boarding for any animal that needs a day or two of post-operative care; AnimalSave pays for this service.
