Issue 28           ~~          November 2010
Greetings!

The last two months have been fantastic.  Donations of pet food and supplies are up!  From September through October, 8,935 pounds were collected and taken to homeless shelters and food banks.

Thank you everyone!

Please keep those donations coming.  The winter months are fast approaching and need is increasing.

Carson City, NV - V&T Pet Clinic and volunteers from  Pets of the Homeless did a free wellness   clinic in Carson City, NV on Sept 18 in  conjunction with "Homeless Connect."    This event brings agencies and churches  together  to offer assistance to the homeless.

Dr. Allen vaccinated over 40 dogs and   cats  and treated pets with worms and ear

infections.  Volunteers gave away more than 400 pounds of dog food.

Roseburg, OR - Julia Russill of Douglas County Low-Cost Veterinary Services, "I'd like to share with you  an event we participated in on Friday, September 17th here at the Roseburg Veterans Administration Hospital Campus.

"We were asked by the coordinators of the Southern Oregon Stand Down to provide veterinary care to the homeless veterans who had their pets with them at this event.  The Stand Down is where homeless veterans are bused in from all over Oregon (including their families and pets, if they have any) to the VA campus for a three-day event.  They erect a tent city on the golf course and provide three meals a day, medical care, dental care, legal counseling, mental health, drug and alcohol addiction counseling, haircuts, - you name it, and it was there - including veterinary care for the pets."

We saw 13 dogs for vaccinations, de-worming, flea treatment, nail trims, and blood work - all at no charge, and gave away lots of pet food, as well."

Vancouver, WA - Dr. Slocum of Hazel Dell Animal Hospital, "My wife and I did the free clinic Saturday, September 11, from 1:30 to 4. We saw 24 cats and 25 dogs. Most needed vaccines, all needed flea control.  We have given 961 pounds of pet food to local food banks."

May Landing, NJ - Best Friends Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Brown - "In September, at our last free clinic at the American Red Cross in Cape May Court House we treated 75 pets."

Annual Campaign

In this difficult economy, with cutbacks and reductions of expenses, it can be difficult for any nonprofit to survive, let alone flourish.  Still, people like you continue to donate pet food to our member donation sites.  Because of you, our 228 plus donation sites have provided over 45 tons of pet food.  Such generosity makes certain pets of the homeless can eat which is one less worry for a homeless person.

Some of you are volunteers who spend your time recruiting new donation sites and talking with homeless shelters and food banks about the program.  Your enthusiasm increases our determination and we thank you.

The work of Pets of the Homeless depends on you.  With your donations, we have awarded over $28,000 in grants to veterinarians and other nonprofit organizations that meet our objectives of providing veterinary care.  Over 2,500 pets of the homeless have received professional health care by volunteer veterinarians.

Working together we are creating a stronger organization and making a better place for pets.  Please join us this holiday season by participating in the Annual Pets of the Homeless Campaign

Your donation of $25, $50 or even $100 provides Pets of the Homeless with the resources to continue this important outreach.  We are a group of volunteers with no paid staff.

As the organization continues to grow nationally, we need on-going support to meet the expanding obligations.  Our main goal and objective is to help more animals but operational expenses are also a necessity.  Many donors make a pledge and others chose to set up monthly donations.  All donations are tax deductible.  Please contact us if you want to join our list of lifesavers.  Thank you.

Pets of the Homeless Makes It to YouTube

Pets of the Homeless has produced a video that tells our story.

We would like to thank Nevada Multimedia Productions, our volunteers and board members  who donated their time.  We are asking you to please forward the YouTube link to your friends and family to introduce them to Pets of the Homeless.  The video was filmed at a free wellness clinic and tells who we are and how we are able to help pets of the homeless.

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

Each year we help to promote this worthy event.  During November 14-20, 2010, you can help by taking food and pet food to a local food bank or pantry.  Watch your local news for events where you can participate and bring awareness to this growing problem.  More information can be found at:
