Good News for Pastor Hector!

Hector Villanueva

Thirty-three people packed the Charlotte Immigration Court to attend Hector Villanueva's deportation hearing. Hector, a CBFNC pastor, testified before Judge Pettinato that he had been arrested and was threatened to be deported because he had applied for citizenship. He was notified that because he had a fifteen-year-old felony for cashing a bad check when he was homeless, even though he served time, he could be deported.

Hector spoke passionately about transforming his life and starting to serve God while in prison, and later becoming ordained into ministry. Hector stated that he was the father of four biological children and two adopted children, one of which has a disability and needs full-time parental assistance. He shared news about his church, Iglesia Bautista la Roca in Siler City, and his ministry in the community.

While five people were lined up to testify to Hector's good character, including CBFNC Missions Coordinator Linda Jones, Judge Pettinato said there was no need for their statements and noted the crowd of friends gathered in Hector's support. He ceased proceedings at the end of Hector's testimony, called in Hector's wife Martha and their six children, and told them that their father would be staying in the United States.

Hector and his family were elated to have a resolution and know for certain that their family will not be forced apart. Those present gave the judge a round of applause and excitedly gathered to hug or shake Hector's hand. After the proceedings, we gathered to pray and give thanks for this blessed day. Hector's cancellation of removal will allow him to stay indefinitely in the U.S. as a legal resident, but current immigration law dictates he can never be a citizen because of the prior felony.

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina worked hard to get ministers and laity to stand in support with Hector, calling local ministers and putting announcements in all of our communication channels. We want to thank those who attended in support of Hector, as well as those who followed his story and prayed for Hector, his family, and his congregation.

Hector may be safe, but our work is not finished. We need to learn more about the problems our Hispanic churches are facing and work with those who our government considers to be "the least of these" who we see as the face of Christ.

Grace and peace,
Coordinators and Staff of the CBFNC

Devotional from David Stratton

One from our CBFNC family has written a devotional for the Scripture focus. Read this week's devotional from David Stratton, Senior Pastor of Woodhaven Baptist Church in Apex.

Love Wins  - A review

Intrigued by all the controversy about Love Wins: A Book about Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived by Rob Bell, I delved into this book expecting some shocking revelation similar to one of the tabloids in the grocery check-out aisles (i.e. "Christ Really an Alien!"). Alas, this book is not nearly as controversial as all the media coverage made it seem, and many of the detractors didn't even read the book before condemning it due to rumors of its content before it hit bookstores. What I can say is this: If I had read this book in college after many bad experiences with churches, I wouldn't have spent several years outside the church.

Ukraine ministrySeptember Ministry Focus: Ministering to children in Ukraine

When CBF field personnel Gennady and Mina Podgaisky arrived in Kiev, Ukraine, in December 2002, they began to recognize children, as young as age 3, living on the streets. They saw a community in whose midst they could be the loving presence of Christ. The children, an estimated 17,000 to 24,000 in Kiev alone, slept in the mornings in the city's underground tunnels and wandered the streets begging for food later in the day.

The Podgaiskys wondered how they could make a difference in the lives of these children in the face of such a proliferate crisis. Now, eight years later, with the combined efforts of government entities and numerous faith partners, the number of children in Kiev living on the street is less than 3,000. The Podgaiskys helped bring together Christians, churches and para-church organizations to minister to children at risk and bring them off the streets.

Missions Request

Clothing Request for Victims of Trafficking

CBF Field Personnel Butch and Nell Green will be partnering informally with Mission Centers of Houston to provide clothing for women who have been taken into police custody while it is determined if they are victims of trafficking. Clothes are needed for these women and girls. Your church, small group, or you as an individual could help by packaging a new small or medium women's sweat suit, a new pair of flip flops and a few pair of new underwear. These will be delivered to the Mission Centers who then distribute them.  The Mission Centers are also in need of plastic and paper bags for their extensive food distribution.  Send all contributions to 1875 Ewing St, Houston, TX 77004.

Disaster Rebuilding Teams are Needed in Raleigh

Thousands of volunteers have helped all across Eastern NC following the April 16 tornadoes. We are in the rebuilding stages in Raleigh and volunteers are needed right now. In the coming weeks we will begin building new homes in Bertie county and additional volunteers will be needed there soon. For more information on how you can be involved go to the Baptists on Mission website.
