There was a chill in the air but warmth in the spirit of local residents who contributed toys to the Hopkinsville Fire and Police Departments for the annual toy drive. Boomer Radio 96.5/100.9 FM broadcast live from Cash Express on West 7th Street gathering toys to fill a squad car apiece from the two departments. The Fire Department held a Christmas Party on Saturday to distribute gifts to youngsters in need with the Police Department using toys collected for the "Morning Miracle" coming up on Christmas Morning where police officers deliver toys and gifts to youngsters who might not otherwise have as bright a Christmas were it not for the generous donations made last week.
This week's HIP (Hopkinsville's Interesting People/Places), while not really a Hopkinsville resident, but is as well known as any HIP we've had on the air. Drew Wilson visited with world famous philanthropist Santa Claus during Hoptown This Morning. Santa will be embarking on his annual worldwide single night flight Friday for the celebration of Christmas. Children in the area are encouraged to be on their best behavior and be in bed on time Friday night ahead of Santa's visit. And don't forget to hang up your stocking! (Photo Gallery) All HIP interviews are placed on our Toyota of Hopkinsville Audio Rack (front page right corner of our websites), so take a listen at your convenience. It's Radio on Demand!
This has come up a couple of times this week from listeners and email as one of the more interesting Christmas Holiday stories. The true story behind Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer:
Believe it or not, the story came before the s ong. In 1939, Robert May was a copywriter in the advertising department for the Montgomery Ward Department Store chain and was asked to write a Christmas children's story that could be given away in booklet form during the holiday season. After rejecting names like Rollo and Reginald, May settled on Rudolph. Using the Ugly Duckling story as inspiration, he created the classic story of a reindeer with a bright red nose. Since May was working for Montgomery Ward when he wrote the story, the company held all the rights to the story and the character meaning May received no royalties. Several years later, May became deeply in debt due to medical bills from his wife's terminal illness. He asked Montgomery Ward to turn the rights to the story over to him and in 1947 they did. Soon after, there was a theatrical cartoon. Then May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, put the story to music. In 1949, Gene Autry recorded the song which sold well over 2 million copies. May stayed with Montgomery Ward until his retirement in 1971 and passed away in 1976.
Other happenings this week you don't want to miss:
